Injury Updates: Jeter, A-Rod, Teixeira, Pineda

Source: riveraveblues.com --- Monday, June 17, 2013
During a conference call this afternoon, Brian Cashman provided a bunch of updates on the various injured Yankees. Here’s a recap: Derek jeter (ankle) took his hacks in batting practice and also off a tee and soft toss. The Cap’n fielded ground balls with a little side-to-side movement for the first time (ever! zing!) as part of his rehab as well. Alex Rodriguez (hip) will face live pitchers on Tuesday for the first time as part of his rehab. Going from simulated games to minor league rehab games to the big leagues is probably a four-week process for a guy who didn’t have a Spring Training , so yeah, All-Star break if everything goes well. Mark Teixeira (wrist) will not be available for at least seven days, and Cashman said he is “leaning personally” towards placing him on the DL. Let’s hope they do that, playing short-handed and potentially bringing him back too soon would suck. Michael Pineda (shoulder) will make his next minor league rehab start with High-A Tampa on Thursday. He’s scheduled to throw 80 pitches. Cashman said Pineda has been sitting 92 and touching 94-95 during his rehab so far. Curtis Granderson (hand) will have the pin removed on Thursday. No word on how long it will be before he can resume baseball activities, but getting the pin taken out is a start. Frankie Cervelli (hand) is still a week or so away from swinging a bat. He has been playing catch and working on receiving drills behind the plate. Eduardo Nune ...

Yankees injury updates: Pineda, Granderson, A-Rod, Youkilis, Jeter

Source: www.pinstripedbible.com --- Monday, June 17, 2013
<img src="http://cdn3.sbnation.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/14943767/20130606_kkt_sv7_353.0_standard_400.0.jpg" & width="150" & height="100" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Brian Cashman spoke to reporters about the Yankees' injuries and Chad Jennings at LoHud summarizes everything nicely. Michael Pineda will pitch on Thursday for the Tampa-A Yankees and will increase his pitch count to 80 pitches. The Yankees have him on a customized rehab program where he will be increasing his pitch count by eight pitches each time out, rather than the customary 15 pitches. His last start was a simulated game where he gave up three hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.2 innings. He threw 74 pitches, 57 of them for strikes. He has been sitting around 92 mph and hitting 94-95 mph. The two leading candidates for Pineda to replace at this point are Phil Hughes and David Phelps . Though this will never happen, Hughes has a 4.89 ERA and 4.60 FIP, while Phelps has a 3.68 ERA and 3.49 FIP, Hughes seems to be the one to go if Pineda proves to be ready at the end of his 30-day rehab assignment. Curtis Granderson will have the pin removed from his knuckle on the 20th and then will be able to begin a short rehab assignment before returning to the team, again. He had a pin put in his broken pinky knuckle in order to ensure that the bone stays in place and heals properly. The surgery to insert it was minor and did not alter his recovery time of one month. He'll need a week of strength and grip exercises before he can even swing a bat again. The Yankees desperately need an upgrade in the outfield. Brett Gardner has been ...

No true reason was provided and given the lack of history between the two schools, the widely speculated reason that Stallings is blocking the transfer is because he feels that Pitt tampered with jeter in some way while he was still with Vanderbilt. So jeter went to a higher court, so to speak - appealing to the university as a whole. But that didn't change things and the school denied his request according to the Post-Gazette . jeter now has a couple of options. He can head somewhere else or he can still come to Pitt and pay his own way his first year. He'll then be able to go on scholarship after that. Really, it comes down to just how badly does jeter want to be a Panther. His primary reason for wanting to come home is to be closer to family. Pitt may be the ideal scenario, but he can also accomplish that by going somewhere like West Virginia or Penn State. He could also head to a smaller non D-I school closer to Pittsburgh. I made this point before, but if Pitt truly did tamper with him, I've really got no beef with what Stallings did in blocking him. Pitt, after all, did the same thing with Rushel Shell. As I've mentioned in the past, it's NOT the same situation - Arizona State has become an arch enemy of sorts ...

Yankeetorial: There is a solution to the 2013 Yankee nightmare: Jeter plays third, A-Rod moves to first

Tex gets the shot, it restores his super powers, he beats Zod, beds Lady Gaga, wins the big game and - uh-oh - eats the red kryptonite-filled cheesecake. His wrist turns to PVC pipe. Ballgame over, season over. The movie turns out to be a remake of the Jose Bautista Story, starring Woody Allen and Fernando Lamas Jr., as Before and After. Coming soon to home video. Listen: The Yankees aren't known as great truth-tellers. When it comes to personal self-disclosure, the team would make the CIA look like Anne Frank. But nobody in the Yankiverse cares. We fans expect them to lie. We prefer lies. It shows they're trying to win ballgames, dammit. If Boston knows Tex is hurt - as we do - they'll have an advantage - not sure what it is, but screw 'em: Lie to us, everybody! Tell us Tex is fine! So... the Team Diogenes announces that Tex is OK, it's just a dream sequence sex hickey, and he's coming back. If the wrist pops after a few games, oh well, he tried. Waiting two extra weeks for season-ending surgery won't matter. His next appearance will be in spring training. And then... let the lies of 2014 form on our tongues! So, our lucky '13 season - whatever is left - hinges on jeter and A-Rod returning after the All-Star break, probably to a team five to 10 games out, in a jumbled division. (BTW, I don't buy the notion that A-Rod will be suspended; MLB would have to exile dozens of players, a veritable nuke i ...

As a result, it looks unlikely that he'll be eligible for a scholarship to play for Pittsburgh next season. Sheldon jeter's path to Pittsburgh will still have one big roadblock - his former coach Kevin Stallings. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo reported today that jeter's appeal to Vanderbilt officials to lift the limitation that Stallings put on his transfer was denied. Former Vanderbilt basketball player Sheldon jeter ... said today his appeal to Vanderbilt officials to be released to the University of Pittsburgh has been denied. - Ray Fittipaldo, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette This development is the latest in a back-and-forth affair that evidently started well before jeter officially announced his intentions to leave Nashville. jeter decided to leave the program for "personal reasons," but became the first player to have his transfer destination publicly blocked by Stallings and the Vanderbilt coaching staff. Other transfers, like Andre Walker's move to Xavier in his senior season, had come and went without a hitch during the prickly coach's long tenure. Stallings has been quiet about the denial, but rumors have spread quickly about the team's motivations. jeter, who grew up just outside of Pittsburgh and had allegedly viewed the Panthers as his top choice coming out of high school, was not offered a sc ...

Yankees shortstop Derek jeter resumed hitting and fielding drills Friday for the first time since mid-April, a day after receiving medical clearance to inc rease his rehabilitation program for a broken left ankle . jeter hit off a tee and took swings at underhand soft toss in an indoor cage before fielding 13 grounders on the grass in front of the infield dirt and 23 more at deep shortstop. He made throws to first on some of the grounders hit to him on the grass. “They gave the green light, so that’s encouraging,” jeter said. “I’m looking forward to it.” Eduardo Nunez, who strained a muscle on his left side while filling in for jeter , took swings and fielded grounders with the Yankees captain. “Everything is a progression,” jeter said. “Do more each and every day. As soon as I can do it, I’ll do it. As soon as I can come back, I’ll be back.” jeter is working out at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “In terms of everyday schedule, I don’t know what that is,” jeter said. “It’s more of taking it one day at a time.” jeter was examined Thursday by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. and recieved clearance to progress into baseball activities. The 38-year-old jeter was examined by Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed surgery on the Yankees captain’s left ankle last year. Anderson had dealt jeter a setback in April when he found a crack in the ankle and ordered him to stop rehab. jeter has spent much time at the Yankees’ training facility in Tampa, Florida, but also traveled to the Bronx to attend games. As he worked on his rehab and his time off stretched further into the 2013 season, jeter showed signs of frustration . “I’ve been told this bone will heal, and when it heals, I’ll be ready to go,” jeter said in late April. “It’s frustrating that I can’t magically make it heal sooner than it’s taking, but I have no doubt I’ll be back.” He also dispelled talk that his injury was related to his advanced age. “Me breaking my ankle wasn’t just because I was getting older,” jeter said. “I played on something that I probably shouldn’t have played on and it ended up breaking. It wasn’t because of my ‘advanced’ age that my ankle broke.” The Yankees currently stand three games back of Boston in the AL East and are riding a three-game losing streak.
