CANNES, France—The U.S. has won its second Grand Prix of this year's Cannes Lions festival, with TBWA\Media Arts Lab in Los Angeles earning the top prize in the Press Lions contest for its magazine ads for Apple's iPad MINI. The ads, released late last year, were placed on the back covers of several national magazines—including Time, Wired and The New Yorker. They showed the tablet at actual size, with its display featuring the actual front cover of that issue of the magazine. Scroll down to see four of the ads. U.S. agencies did not pick up any Gold Lions, but did win three Silver Lions and five Bronze Lions. BBDO in New York won a silver for Snickers, a silver for Gillette and a bronze for Foot Locker. The other silver went to DDB in New York for its "Water Is Life" campaign. Picking up the other bronzes were Lapiz in Chicago for P&G's Gain with Oxi; Ogilvy & Mather in Chicago for Huggies; Pereira & O'Dell in San Francisco for Scrabble; and Arnold in Boston for Jack Daniel's. DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim is going back on statements he made back in May , when he said the next model of the iPad MINI -- expected this fall -- would come equipped with a Retina display and an updated processor. In an added twist, before he made that statement, Shim said the Retina iPad MINI would not ship before 2014. Now, Shim writes that Apple will refresh its iPad MINI line later this year , but the Retina display will not make an appearance before 2014. Quote: Apple is expected to refresh its iPad MINI in the second half of the year. The new iPad MINI will continue to use a 7.9-inch display with a 1024×768 resolution, but it will use the iOS 7 operating system and an A6 processor, in a slimmer design than the current generation. Another iPad MINI is also planned for production but not until early 2014. That device is expected to feature a QXGA (2048×1536) resolution display and the iOS 7 operating system. It's unclear which DisplaySearch report is correct, though it's widely expected that Apple will ship a Retina-display equipped iPad MINI at some point. Despite numerous reports suggesting Apple’s second-generation iPad MINI will ship later this year with a Retina display, one industry watcher believes the Retina-equipped version of Apple’s latest tablet won’t launch until sometime in 2014. According to NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, Apple’s next iPad MINI will use the same display as the current model, though it will feature an upgraded processor and a slimmer design. The analyst also says Apple will launch a new Retina iPad MINI in early 2014, though his claims are riddled with holes. First, it seems unlikely that Apple would launch a new iPad MINI this fall and then a third-generation model in “early 2014.” Apple has grouped iPad launches closely in the past, but only when it offered a minor upgrade on the fourth-generation model that added Apple’s new lightning connector port and coincided with the iPhone 5 launch. The addition of a Retina display would hardly be a minor upgrade. Beyond that, Apple is currently pushing developers to issue only Retina-compatible apps, and with the recent requirement that all screenshots in the App Store be optimized for Retina displays, it seems unlikely that the company would then launch a new device without a Retina display unless it ran into some serious manufacturing snags.
