The International Energy Agency (IEA) has applauded Finland’s energy policy framework launched on May 23, 2013. On the basis of its review, the IEA stated that Finland seems to be committed to a sustainable energy future, as its energy policy framework is broad and coherent, covering all sectors and paving the way for a more sustainable energy system. Finland’s energy consumption per capita is the highest in the IEA, thanks to its energy-intensive industries and the cold climate. The report, Energy Policies of IEA Countries – Finland 2013 Review, states that the country has set an ambitious renewable energy programme that aims to meet 38 per cent of its final energy consumption from renewables by 2020. While presenting the report in Helsinki, Maria van der Hoeven, the IEA Executive Director said that Finland was immensely reliant on imported fossil fuels, which made security of supply a priority. “Commendably, the government’s principal long-term energy security goal is clearly tied to another key pillar of its energy policy – the decarbonisation of its economy, largely by developing cleaner means of energy production and consumption,” she noted. Renault and France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) have signed a new four-year framework agreement. The new framework agreement covers new collaborative research and innovation opportunities for the years ahead. Research areas include neuroscience, virtual reality, ergonomics, new materials and catalysis. Renault and the CNRS have been working together for decades and have signed several framework agreements since 1993. Recent changes in the research landscape and scientific strategies of both partners have prompted a review of the terms of the framework agreement. Following one year of talks on scientific, strategic and legal issues, Renault and the CNRS are pleased to announce that a new framework agreement was signed on May 15, 2013, and will remain in force for the next four years. The new framework agreement will give a long-term perspective to the research work currently carried out alongside CNRS researchers, while also covering new collaborative research and innovation opportunities in the years ahead.
