We on the other hand have embraced the advances in technology because we find it interesting and practical for us. But as you've seen in earlier posts, we don't go overboard with it all. For several years we used cell or mobile phones only, and then we signed up for a special rate with a local cable provider tha t included phone service, so we now have a home phone again. When we got our newer cell phones, I had a "collection" of about 4 old model cell phones. I don't think that I'm going to be able to sell my phone , especially after all these years, though I did look into it not long ago. However, I may look into donating the phones since they are quite old. In spite of their age, and the fact that they aren't connected to a phone service, they are still able to dial 911 if you're on the road and in an emergency. For some, this provides them security when traveling or on the road, and may be the only reason they'd want a cell phone. There is a neighborhood garage sale coming up, it might be something we can add to the pile of things we a ...

In spite of all our best intentions to make sure there are no hazards for our children around the house, the older they grow, the more resourceful they become, and the harder it is to keep the house “safe”. Of course, having a child like Hercules also increases the risk of these incidences happening. As is it, this was not his first visit to the hospital but the third – the first was when he cut his brow and the second was when he had dengue . You would never expect something like this with Aristotle because he never put foreign objects into his mouth and he never did anything “dangerous”. What happened? Hercules was tired and hungry so I served him dinner early. He ate a large bowl of Niku Udon. When he finished, he said he was still hungry, so I gave him a bowl of strawberries for dessert. He was done by 6pm. Aristotle hadn’t eaten so I sat Hercules in front of the TV for an episode or Tom and Jerry, thinking to put him straight to bed after I served Aristotle his dinner. Just as I was coming out of the kitchen, I heard Hercules coughing. It sounded like he was choking on something. I rushed to him and brought him to the sink and tried to help him get whatever it was out. I asked him what he put in his mouth (since he was long done with any food) and he finally answered, “A coin.” I write this all very calmly now that Hercules is safe and well, but I assured you, I was anything but c ...

Employees at Geneva Middle School South went as far as donning injury makeup to make the dramatized events more lifelike. The event was notable for its extensiveness, as it involved all 600 certified staff and administrators in the district. Although the chances of a boiler explosion may seem remote, faculty members believe that students and staff should be prepared to react suitably in the unlikely event that a disaster were to occur and campus safety were endangered. "We hope that it doesn't [happen], but the more training and the more you go over it, you come out with a sense of what you would do," Roxanne Sronkoski, one of the school's nurses who participated in the event, told the news source. Understanding the dire implications of such an occurrence, staff members at the school pulled out all the stops. According to Amy Campbell, the district's emergency management coordinator, the event had been organized for more than a year. This training session – as well as several others – was paid for with funds from a $375,000 federal grant. Although many of the drill's participants had fun during the event – by acting frenzied and unruly – the event was not taken lightly. According to local emergency officials, the exercise ...

RedR UK - Disaster Risk Reduction in Emergencies

Source: www.alnap.org --- Friday, May 17, 2013
RedR, 19 August 2013 About the Course: Set amidst the context of global climate change and population growth, the number of natural and human-made emergencies every year has increased drastically in the past decade. Although floods, earthquakes, droughts, and other natural hazards cannot be prevented, their impact on communities can be limited through disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices. You will learn the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematically analyzing and managing the causal factors of disasters. For example, the course examines reducing exposure to hazards, lessening vulnerability of people and property, wisely managing land and the environment, or improving preparedness for adverse events. Blending theory with practice, this workshop takes you through good practices in the stages of the disaster risk management cycle and the commonly used terminology, frameworks, tools and approaches to effective DRR. The curriculum also covers a selection of global DRR documents and frameworks, including the United Nations-endorsed Hyogo Framework for Action and the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) system. Who should attend? The course is designed to benefit field practitioner staff of INGOs, NGOs, CBOs and goverment department staff responsible for disaster risk reduction. For further information please visit our website: http://www.redr.org.uk/en/Training/find-a-training-course.cfm/url/DRR ...

We have written about improving your business acumen by taking a Maximizing Your Membership class or meeting with an SBDC advisor, and this week we want to deal with the topic of protecting your business. Snowfall was below normal this year, rains have been nominal and summer is fast approaching. Is your business protected and do you have an emergency plan for your business? There are some simple steps you can take to make sure your business is prepared in case you need to evacuate. Whether it be a fire or flood, are you covered with a traditional insurance plan, do you have an emergency contingency plan and are you prepared to operate your business remotely? There are several systems and websites available to help you plan accordingly. The American Red Cross has a wonderful and useful site to help you with planning for an emergency. It has a checklist of items you should be aware of, including an evacuation plan, what to take and what you might do if you have time prior to any evacuation. If you own or operate a restaurant facility, can you get your customers out of the restaurant in an orderly, safe and timely fashion? Can you do the same if you have a retail establishment and the front door is blocked? Let’s talk about your business systems and think about these ...

There quickly came a heightened awareness of chemicals in our communities for fear of the same accident happening here. At that time, few computer programs were on the market to support chemical emergency professionals. So in 1986, together with my colleagues at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we developed free software to help local governments prevent, prepare, and respond to chemical emergencies. The software, Computer Aided Management of Emergency Operations ( CAMEO ), was developed as a hazardous chemicals search tool. It now tracks facilities that store chemicals, provides emergency planning contacts and resources, and contains a chemical reference library. As fire and police departments, industries, universities, environmental organizations, state, local and federal agencies began to use CAMEO, they gave us feedback on the kinds of features they’d find useful. We developed ALOHA, a planning/predictive tool used to investigate the potential impact of a tank rupture, drum spill, truck rollover, or similar incidents. Its modeling capabilities are also used during post-incident investigations. For example, a chemical release air dispersion model can be created after an incident to help investigators determine whether there were contaminants or dangerous areas during the incident. CAMEO users kept t ...

It is critical that you remember that your vehicle in a survival situation is your shelter and it will protect you from the elements, insects and predators. There has been case after case of people becoming stranded in their vehicle because of a mechanical breakdown, or they took a shortcut, got lost and their vehicle became stuck. In many of these cases, individuals left their vehicle to find help, and succumbed to hypothermia, dehydration or from injuries. They simply could not find their way back to civilization. Rescue personnel only managed to find an empty vehicle because the occupants decided to abandon their shelter. One of the reasons they may have left their vehicle is because they did not have any provisions such as food , water and blankets . Preparing Your Vehicle Preparing your vehicle is particularly important if you plan to travel outside of your area. People become complacent because they commute everyday using the same routes and nothing ever happens. If their car does break down they call home or a tow service. Once out of your area, and you have a breakdown, are caught in bad weather or your vehicle slides off the highway there may not be anyone to call or there is no cell phone service. At this point, you are stranded miles from anywhere. ...
