As you may have heard, there’s a runoff Tuesday in Los Angeles to elect the next mayor of the second-largest city in the nation — a city with about 3.8 million inhabitants and some well-known transportation challenges. I ran the following post on March 4, the day before the primary election in Los Angeles. I’m running it again today as a reminder to vote in tomorrow’s mayoral election between Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel because whichever succeeds Antonio Villaraigosa will likely have a hand in many important transportation decisions, including project acceleration, the future of congestion pricing projects, the construction of five rail projects and possible changes in Metro’s fare structure in the future. Look up your polling place here . Metro is a county agency and is overseen by a 13 member Board of Directors who serve as the deciders on most significant issues. The Mayor of Los Angeles gets a seat on that board and gets to fill three other seats with his appointees. A majority of the Metro Board — i.e. seven votes — is required to approve most items. Four of those seven votes are controlled by the Los Angeles mayor. That means that the mayor controls more than half the votes needed to approve items that have impacts across Los Angeles County and the region. Here are some items that are likely to confront the Metro Board in the next four or so years, meaning they’re items likely to c ...

Six months until election day, many New Yorkers can’t recognize mayoral candidates

Source: pix11.com --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
Downtown, BROOKLYN (PIX11) – The field of nearly a dozen people who want to be mayor may be full of men — and one woman — who have the drive and persistence to hold the city’s highest office, but what they don’t have, despite spending $3 million so far on campaigns, is recognition among voters. An unscientific survey further shows that people who are as yet undeclared or undecided as candidates may have as good a chance of becoming mayor as people who’ve been in the race for many months. PIX11 News went out to a busy New York City intersection — Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues in Brooklyn — to ask a very simple question of potential voters: Can you name any of the candidates for mayor? The headshakes, and other responses, such as the “No. Honestly, no,” from Keyana Barber of the Bronx, indicated one of two things: that either the people who wish to be mayor have some serious work ahead of them to get noticed by voters, or New York City will end up with a mayor elected by a small minority of its citizens who know barely anything about any of the large field of candidates. In the most recent polls, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has been ahead of the pack. However, she needs 40 percent of the primary vote, as opposed to the 28 percent that she registered in the April 19th Quinnipiac College poll in order to avoid a runoff election. PIX11 News showed Quinn’s photo randomly at the Brooklyn intersection where passengers from ten d ...

It’s 27 April, election day in Reykjavík, and the months of campaigning are over. The parliamentary candidates of the Pirate Party have nothing to do except drive around the various party headquarters appropriating cake and crisps. They prefer to call it “challenging the antagonism of the current political climate”. By dropping in on rival parties. And taking their food. “This is taxpayer-funded, so actually it’s already my food,” says Kristjan, a huge, jolly, bearded technologist who is running as a candidate in Reykjavík. He slips a choc ice into his pocket as we say goodbye to the centrist Progressive Party, with its impressive spread of smoked-tongue pavlova. Next, we’re off to see the Social Democrats, who may or may not have coffee. There are 15 parties running in what may be the oddest national election Europe has seen in decades, so we’re unlikely to go hungry. http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2013/05/icelands-elections-shattered-fairy-tale Iceland's elections: A shattered fairy tale www.newstatesman.com After the financial crash of 2008, Iceland refused to bail out its banks and overthrew its government. Here is how Karl transcribed the Rhoades' email: We must make sure that the talking points reflect all agency equities, including those of the State Department, and we don’t want to undermine the FBI investigation. We thus will work through the talking points tomorrow morning at the Deputies Committee meeting. Though this point wasn't the main focus of Karl's report, it was important because it showed that the White House was backing State in pushing inconvenient facts out of the talking points -- this included the fact that terrorists were behind the attack and that State had been negligent when it came to providing security for our diplomatic mission. In the end, as we now all now know, and apparently due to the prodding of Hillary Clinton's right hand woman at State -- Victoria Nuland, the talking points ended up being completely wrong, which resulted in the American people being misled by the Obama Administration, straight through to a speech the President gave at the ...
