AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A combination of severe weather events have Central Texas peach farmers expecting a meager crop once again this season, after several years of little yield due to whimsical weather.The Austin American-Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/12GYZxQ ) about 90 percent of the Gillespie County peach crops have been wiped out by a warmer-than-normal winter, two late freezes and a hailstorm that pummeled the few peaches that remained on the trees."The damage is pretty widespread," said Jamey Vogel, owner of Vogel Orchard in Stonewall and president of the Hill Country Fruit Council.Other crops such as apricots and plums also were badly hurt by the unusual weather patterns.About 40 percent of the state's peaches come from Gillespie County where average yield has dropped from about 200 bushels per acre in good seasons to about a third of that in more recent years."We wish the weather would go back to normal," Ricky Priess, owner of Gold Orchards in Stonewall told the newspaper.Priess' family has grown peaches in the area since 1940. He said that he has lost has entire crop for the year.Over the past decade, he has had five years with very small crops or no crops at all and only had a bumper crop in 2010.
