And those were to eBay and Google. “At least I could actually make a pseudo-scientific argument that in every case Yahoo offered $1 billion and it was rejected, it was the correct thing to do,” said Thiel. I should say that I know absolutely nothing about any sort of talks/deals between Tumblr and Yahoo. And I’m not sharing this to suggest that Tumblr should turn down such a supposed offer (my initial gut feeling is actually that such a partnership would make a lot of sense). I just found it fascinating given how closely the reported number is to the key number repeated in Thiel’s story. ...

They have morphed into Marco Zuckerberg and Mark Rubio. You’ve heard the radio spots and seen the television ads featuring Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio talking about the dire need to do something about the “immigration problem” not “illegal immigration” but immigration. During a minute’s worth of huffing and puffing Rubio tries to bulldoze past any logical objections to erasing our borders with faux tough talk designed to impress us with his credentials as an “insider’ who KNOWS more than we do. Rubio’s media crusade is funded by liberal Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg. To impress us Rubio uses buzz phrases like “conservative immigration reform” “Tough border triggers” and “no giveaways for law breakers.” That putting these words in Rubio’s mouth is not only breathtakingly insulting to true conservatives, but simply not true shouldn’t resonate with a liberal like Zuckerberg but Rubio has been “playing a conservative on TV” long enough to know better. These spots betray a gross under estimation of conservatives. Zuckerberg probably believes conservatives marry their sisters and are far less intelligent than he is, but Rubio apparently thinks conservatives are pining for a way to suck up to Hispanics the way White liberals sucked up to Blacks and elected Barack Obama. The push comes after entrepreneurs Elon Musk and David Sacks recently withdrew their support. Zuckerberg launched FWD.us to press for comprehensive immigration reform . But the group has been heavily criticized by some immigration reform supporters in recent weeks for its television ad campaign praising lawmakers for backing projects like the Keystone XL pipeline and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. FWD.us has argued that the ads were meant to give home district support to lawmakers backing immigration reform. The ads were up for one week but are no longer on air. Both CREDO and former Sen. Russ Feingold's (D-Wis.) Progressives United are running campaigns calling on the group's supporters to resign from the organization. They told The Huffington Post that combined, they have had about 63,000 people sign their petitions against FWD.us. The Huffington Post reached out to the 33 non-Facebook supporters of FWD.us for comment. Spokespeople for 13 of them -- Aditya Agarwal (Dropbox), Drew Houston (Dropbox), Ruchi Sanghvi (Dropbox), Jim Breyer (Accel Partners), Matt Cohler (Benchmark), Bill Gates (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), Steve Ballmer (Microsoft), Brad Smith (Microsoft), Josh James (Domo), Mark Pincus (Zynga), Kei ...

Focused on the expansion of the H1-B visas , FWD.us recently launched a series of advertisements featuring lawmakers pushing for immigration reform. The group is sending out two sets of ads from two separate subsidiaries: “Americans for a Conservative Direction,” targeted towards conservatives, and the “Council for American Job Growth,” targeted towards independent voters. Amidst the calls for action to conservative voters, however, are blatant references to other key issues — notably the expansion of the Keystone XL pipeline. While variations in messaging is not an uncommon advertisement strategy, using one issue to get support for another will not go unnoticed in the political world. The super PAC’s ploy to use the controversial issue of the Keystone XL pipeline to garner conservative support was, indeed, noticed by not one, but two of the group’s donors: Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, and David Sacks, founder of the social network Yammer. Once a supporter of the group’s seemingly noble cause, Musk condemns FWD.us for the political tactics used to win over support. Explaining his departure from FWD.us, Musk suggested that contrary to popular belief, politicians do listen to their moral compass. “I have spent a l ...

Today’s tech moguls don’t employ many Americans, they don’t pay very much in taxes or tend to share much of their wealth, and they live in a separate world that few of us could ever hope to enter. But while spending millions bending the political process to pad their bottom lines, they’ve remained far more popular than past plutocrats, with 72 percent of Americans expressing positive feelings for the industry, compared to 30 percent for banking and 20 percent for oil and gas. Outsource Manufacturing, Import Engineers Perversely, the small number of jobs—mostly clustered in Silicon Valley—created by tech companies has helped its moguls avoid public scrutiny. ...
