(Ed Andrieski, The Associated Press) The Denver Broncos signed seventh-round draft pick and third-string quarterback Zac Dysert to a four-year contract Monday that included a $48,200 signing bonus. Now Dysert goes to work on making the 53-man roster. “I was talking to my agent (Mike McCartney, son of Hall of Fame college coach Bill McCartney) before the draft and this was our No. 1 pick,” said Dysert, who played four years at the Miami (Ohio) University. “Everything worked out perfectly. I did take a visit here — loved it from the minute I got here. It was like, ‘God’s got a perfect plan for me and this is the place for me for his plan to work out great.’ I’m here for a reason, so I’m just going to take it as best as I can and run with the opportunity that I have.” The Broncos kept three quarterbacks last year because second-stringer Brock Osweiler was a rookie and third-stringer Caleb Hanie was veteran insurance. But now that Osweiler is the most experienced of the backups to Peyton Manning, it’s possible the Broncos will only carry two quarterbacks on their roster. Zac Dysert finally realized his National Football League dreams late on Saturday afternoon, when the Denver Broncos selected him in the middle of the seventh (and final) round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Dysert was the 234th player taken overall and the 28th in the seventh round. This is a wonderful situation for Dysert. Obviously, Peyton Manning is the established starter. Former Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler is entrenched as the back-up. Dysert can slip into the third spot on the depth chart and absorb as much as possible while he (eventually) competes with Osweiler for the back-up role. Many expect Manning to play two or three more years, so Dysert has that long to learn and grow his game enough to prove that he can be the new starter upon Manning's retirement. And honestly, is there a better quarterback to learn from? Manning is to football as Greg Maddux was to baseball -- he is the most cerebral quarterback in the game. Given Dysert's physical tools, he could become a big success if Manning's habits rub off on him. Of course, if Dysert ever needs another opinion, he can always go upstairs and talk to Hall of Famer John Elway. Dysert also gets to learn from one of the more decorated quarterback coaches in the game, Greg Knapp. Knapp has coached Steve Young , Jeff Garcia , Michael Vick and Matt Schaub . ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — In the seventh round of the 2013 NFL draft , the Denver Broncos selected No. 234, quarterback Zac Dysert of Miami-Ohio. Dysert is now the third quarterback in line behind Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler. The Broncos selected Osweiler during the second round draft last year. On having the opportunity to learn from Manning, Dysert said, “I don’t think there could be any better spot, especially to learn under, besides Peyton. He’s always been somebody I’ve looked up to, just because of the way he has always played and the way he prepares and things like that. So, I’m ecstatic at this opportunity. I wouldn’t rather be any other place.” Dysert tore his hamstring in February, but says he is 100 percent now, and there is nothing to worry about. The Broncos also agreed to terms with free-agent linebacker Shaun Phillips Saturday. With the 234th pick in the 2013 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos added an intriguing developmental quarterback, Zac Dysert from Miami (OH). I believe that good teams draft and develop quarterbacks as often as possible. There aren't 32 starting-quality quarterbacks in the NFL, so teams are always scrambling to find value wherever they can. Dysert has four years of starting experience, and he showed improvement as a passer in each season. He went through several coaching staff changes while in college yet still became a record-setting quarterback at the school. He tied or broke many of the records put in place by Ben Roethlisberger years ago. He is known as a tough leader with the moxie to rally his players when the chips are down. Dysert will play through mistakes, and he shows strong mental toughness. He has a short memory, and after an interception is thrown, he'll still challenge the edges of a defense in order to make a big play. After he's sacked, Dysert doesn't go into a shell. Instead, he keeps firing downfield with an even bigger chip on his shoulder. Dysert is an accurate quarterback on short and underneath routes. He does a good job of leading his receivers and hitting them in stride so they can maximize yards after the catch. No, Chris Mortensen, Zac Dysert is not like John Elway. Let's just calm the hell down. Zac Dysert is a seventh-round draft pick for a reason. Sure, the kid has a good arm and a quick release. Sure, he's mobile and throws well on the run. I'll even grant you that Dysert should have been drafted two or three rounds earlier. In fact, the Broncos got a lot of value right here. But he's got a long way to go before he's reading pro defenses and playing from under center. Hell, he's still got to go through Brock Osweiler.
