By Adam Craig The first round of the Enduro World Series was host to more former World Champions (a whopping 16) than you could shake a stick at. Yeah, a stacked field. For a first-time race Series, the EWS is off to a hell of a start. It’s funny, the collective mountain bike community has been pretty pumped on the inception of the Enduro World Series (or “EWS”), myself included. On one hand, at the inaugural round, there was certainly a lot of excitement. On the other, the EWS is a Series comprised of events that have been running for quite some time. In France and Italy especially. It was interesting and awesome to observe the two groups (Johnny Come Latelys and regulars) coming together this past week. Those of us who are excited to be a part of this ever-growing community got our first taste of the events and atmosphere here in Punta Ala, Italy. We also got a taste of some damn fine enduro riding, whatever that is… Let’s just say it’s mountain biking. Another common taste from the week was pizza. Really good pizza. You see, the standard bike race model for elite riders involves showing up, settling in, going grocery shopping and getting into a practice schedule that’s mandated by the organizer. Couple hours a day or so, leaving plenty of time to cook and lurk. Yes, the pizza is damn good in Italy. Guess it goes without saying.... Reading it made three things become very apparent to me; firstly that you’ve got to be insanely fit to win one of these races, secondly that your bike handling skills have to be second to none, and finally does the whole issue of ‘practice’ need sorting one way or the other asap? He’s been at the top of the sport in several disciplines for over a decade (4x World Champion, multiple 4x World Cup overall championships, has hit the World Cup podium in DH, and was an Olympian in BMX). This season, he decided to turn his focus to Enduro. Jared’s training is legendary, so there was no doubt he would commit 100% to becoming a great enduro racer. His first indication came at the Australian National Championships this year — he finished eight in the pro cross-country race and less than an hour after his race, qualified first in downhill and went on to place second in the finals.
