Having a hard time with Windows 8? Here’s a thread for simple, helpful, and head-slapping obvious (to you), Windows 8 shortcuts. Make Your Windows 8 Life Easier Here’s three: Try moving your mouse into the left corner, to show the start screen hot corner. Now that it’s visible, try right-clicking on it. You’ll see a bunch of helpful administrative tool shortcuts. The Winkey can be incredibly useful. Here’s three shortcuts that I think are pretty useful: Winkey+Tab opens up the app switcher (kind of like Alt+Tab, right?), Winkey+PrintScreen automatically dumps a .png of your screen into your Pictures folder (no more using Paint! Use Snip if you’re using a keyboard without a PrintScreen button), Winkey+I opens up the settings menu (, and Winkey+T switches you directly to the desktop. If you want to quickly write equations for school (or work, etc.) then use the Maths Input Tool. It works well, though I’d recommend it specifically to people who have devices with an active digitiser and a stylus, unless you like drawing with a mouse. What are your tips? In the event of a serious problem with Windows, a Blue screen error code can help you figure out what's wrong. If your system reboots too quickly to see what the code is, disable automatic restarts. You can find this setting in the "Advanced system settings" section under your computer properties (Win+Pause). On the advanced tab, click "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery" and uncheck the "Automatic restart" box, as seen above. This feature has been around for a while, but we've never featured it before, so it's a good tip to have on hand. Justin Angel has been dissecting leaked images of Windows 8.1, including the RT version of the OS, which shares much communality with Windows Phone, and which in the next version of Windows Phone is expected to present a near identical API surface and environment to developers. A Microsoft Job posting from February for example states the Windows Phone team is… leading the charge to bring much of the WinRT API surface and the .NET Windows Store profile to the Phone. There is therefore good reason to believe the new features of Windows RT will also be coming to Windows Phone Blue. According to Justin Angel this will include support for Bluetooth 4, via RFComm and and Bluetooth Low Energy via the GATT profile. Windows RT will then support a wide range of accessories, such as heart rate meters, blood glucose monitors, activity monitors and an increasing range of sensors. Justin notes Windows RT will also soon support VPN, saying Microsoft is adding a whole new Windows.Networking.vpn namespace to help deal with VPN in WinRT apps. Also welcome is a new API for Low Lag Cameras, which will enable developers to more easily capture HDR pictures. Other useful APIs that will probably come to Windows Phone is a geofencing API, where apps can register to be activated when a user enters or leaves an area.
