Paul "Bear" Vasquez first noticed the Wildfires making their way through central California and Yosemite National Park on Sunday — part of what's feared to be the worst season in a century . He had been talking on the phone with a CNN reporter, but he immediately grabbed his camera and started filming. From the very first shot, Bear's live report has the look and feel of the "Double Rainbow" video. He zooms in and out on the fire and stack of smoke and expresses his amazement at the height and amount of destruction the flames are causing to the forest. Read more... (Tom Cooper, Getty Images) By Michael Toscano Guest Commentary Over the past weeks, we all watched in sadness as Wildfires in Colorado’s Black Forest raged out of control, destroying more than 500 homes and displacing nearly 40,000 people. As first responders battled the fires, critical tools that could have assisted them on the front lines — unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) — largely sat idle because of government regulations. Unmanned aircraft could make firefighters' jobs both easier and safer, providing them with situational awareness by flying through smoke and at night, situations too dangerous for piloted aircraft. UAS can see through smoke to identify hotspots, help forecasters predict the weather, drop fire retardants and alert authorities to people and property in harm’s way. In spite of these obvious benefits, before a firefighter is allowed to deploy a UAS, they must first get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. When fires are burning and spreading by the minute, this process often makes it difficult, if not impossible, to get timely approval to fly. As a result, the U.S. Forest Service recently reported that it won't be able to use the technology this year in the Northwest. In addition, current rules sometimes require that a chase airplane follow UAS for safety reasons, negating the benefits of unmanned aircraft ...

Local health officials are advising people with breathing conditions to stay indoors, and away from the unhealthy particles the fire is kicking up. The Wildfires are producing a lot of smoke, which is affecting air quality throughout the Central Valley. That smoke is affecting the foothill areas down to Fresno, and Tulare and counties. Allergies and hot weather were already making it difficult for many and now doctors say the smoke is making it much worse, especially for people with respiratory or breathing problems. Heather Heinks with the Valley Air District said, "What folks need to keep in mind is that if they see and smell smoke, then they are more than likely inhaling particulate matter, which can have a severe health impact." Dr. Praveen Buddiga with the Baz Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center said, "People are really recommended to, those who have respiratory conditions or breathing conditions, to take their medicines and try to keep their windows closed. Try not to go outside..." The Valley Air District has monitors with air quality information displayed around the Valley. ...

"A few months later, Russia's security (FSB) chief, Aleksandr Bortnikov warned, 'al-Qaeda was complicit in recent forest fires in Europe' as part of the terrorists' 'strategy of a thousand cuts.' Bortnikov spoke of 'extremist sites [that] contained detailed instructions of waging the forest jihad and stressed that such a method had proved itself effective as it inflicted both physical and moral damage, needed little training or investment and it was extremely hard for police to find and apprehend the arsonists.' "Since then, more fatwas advocating that 'Fire is cheap, easy and effective tool for economic warfare' have been issued. Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post (COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- Terrie and John Gardner thought they’d have more time. They were at their Colorado Springs home a year ago, nervously monitoring the Waldo Canyon Fire that was spreading quickly and getting closer. “We started packing some things and preparing,” Terrie recalls. By about 4 p.m., they still hadn’t been told to evacuate. Suddenly, they realized if they waited for an official notice, they’d be dead. “I had gone upstairs for something, looked out the window and saw that the fire had come out the window over the ridge,” she says. “We started throwing everything in the car.” John, 54, says he heard Terrie yell from upstairs. “She says, ‘Come upstairs, you have to see this.’ I look out the window and … the hillside is just glowing. It’s like, ‘Wow.’ We started moving a little bit faster.” The couple managed to quickly pack up their dogs, important pictures, documents, computer equipment and even John’s favorite guitar. “In hindsight, there are things you wish you would have grabbed but they’re just gone,” John says. Terrie, 54, says, “I grabbed a couple of boxes of my daughter’s things. She had a coat that I actually wore as a baby and so I had that.” The Waldo Canyon blaze would become the most destructive blaze in Colorado history, burning the Gardner’s home to the ground along with nearly 350 others.
