Ex-Wichita State Teammates Blanchard, Peters Claim Top Two Berths in PBA Badger Open Stepladder Finals

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Former Wichita State University teammates Josh Blanchard of Gilbert, Ariz., and Jake Peters of Decatur, Ill., claimed the top two positions for the Professional Bowlers Association Badger stepladder finals Tuesday night at AMF Waukesha. Blanchard, the 2011-12 PBA Rookie of the Year, won seven of his eight matches Tuesday night to post a 26-game total of 6,426 pins, clinching the top berth in the June 1 Badger Open stepladder finals by 10 pins over Peters. Peters, who started the day in first place, plunged to 18th after the morning match play round, but surged back into contention by also winning seven of his final eight matches for a 6,416 total. Blanchard and Peters, who won a pair of Intercollegiate Men’s Team Championships with Wichita State in 2009 and 2010, are both trying for their first PBA Tour titles. Saginaw (Mich.) Valley State collegiate bowler Aaron Lorincz of Belleville, Mich., the 2013 Intercollegiate Singles Champion, qualified third with 6,327 pins. Rounding out the stepladder finals in the first of four GEICO PBA Summer Swing tournaments will be Michael Haugen Jr. of Phoenix and Kurt Pilon of Warren, Mich. “I told my wife last week I thought I could be really strong on this pattern,” Blanchard said of the 52-foot Badger lane condition, the longest oil pattern the PBA Tour has ever used. “I really felt like I could win on it. Wichita State dominated the Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports championship, setting a record for aggregate score. The Shockers won four team titles and finished in the top three in 14 of the 15 sports it sponsors. Its average finish of 2.3 placed it ahead of Illinois State (3.3), Southern Illinois (4.3), Indiana State (4.6) and Creighton (4.8). Shocker infielder Erik Harbutz went 6 for 9 with two walks in the series. Scores: WSU 8, Northwestern 2; WSU 5, Northwestern 0; WSU 4, Northwestern 3 (10) Records: WSU 34-25, NU 22-26 Key stats: The Shockers didn’t commit an error, the kind of defensive effort it will take to win the MVC Tournament. Nine Shockers pitched and and two allowed runs (Cale Elam and T.J. McGreevy). WSU hit .373, totaling 38 hits. Only four went for extra bases (two doubles, two home runs), which explains why the games were all close going into the late innings. The Shockers hit. 373 to Northwestern’s .250 and had to fight to win all three games. The largest margin entering the seventh was three runs. WSU doesn’t possess the extra-base power to blow teams out. While Illinois State, Missouri State and Creighton played crucial MVC series filled with close games. While WSU starters came out after 70-80 pitches, Illinois State pushed its pitchers to two complete games. Creighton and MSU spread out the innings, especially on Sunday. We’ll see if that affects this week’s tournament. The No. 1 pitchers who went Thursday will come back Tuesday, short rest for college arms used to weekly start. Wichita State lost the Missouri Valley Conference title and won a game on Saturday in its last at-bat. Coach Gene Stephenson addressed his uncertain future. Quite a day at Eck Stadium. WSU rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Northwestern 4-3 in 10 innings. After, facing a pack of cameras, Stephenson looked around the 7,851-seat stadium his winning teams built and tried to turn the conversation to the MVC Tournament. Wichita State needed one like this. In fact, it could use two more feel-good games to prepare for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Shockers defeated Northwestern 8-2 on Thursday at Eck Stadium to start a three-game non-conference series. They remained in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference when first-place Illinois State defeated Southern Illinois 4-3 to open that series. SIU must win at least one game to help WSU clinch a share of the title. WSU (32-25) can’t control those games. It can work on adjusting to the off-speed pitches that frustrated hitters against Creighton and Oklahoma State in recent games. The Shockers looked like a savvy hitting team against Northwestern (22-24) by knocking out 15 hits and consistently taking the ball up the middle and to the opposite field. They roughed up Wildcats ace Luke Farrell, who entered the game with a 1.84 ERA, for nine hits and four runs in six innings. Read more ...

Seven members of Wichita State University’s rowing team and others from WSU helped build a nature center at Riverside Elementary School on Thursday, the university said in a news release. Wichita — A Wichita State University Russian History Professor is working on two books about the resurgence of Buddhism and Buddhist imagery and symbols in the former Soviet Union. Wichita State’s Helen Hundley spent last summer in the highlands of Mongolia and Siberia for her research. Hundley says that since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990′s, a Buddhist explosion has spread across the region. She says the new form of “public Buddhism” has changed the physical and cultural landscape of Mongolia and Siberia alike. She says the Soviets banned public expressions of Buddhism but now roadside prayer shrines are everywhere and Buddhist prayer wheels for sale on street corners. Wichita State had won four of the five previous meetings with Oklahoma State before this season, games that probably contributed to OSU changing coaches. New coach Josh Holliday, a former Cowboy who played in some of the rivalry’s hottest games, reversed direction in his debut season. Tuesday’s 7-2 win at Eck Stadium gave No. 20 OSU its first regular-season sweep of WSU since 1994 in the on-and-off-again series. Scores: Creighton 6, WSU 5; Creighton 3, WSU 1; WSU 4, Creighton 1 Records: WSU 31-24, 15-6 MVC; CU 28-14, 11-7 Key stats: WSU ranked No. 25 nationally in fielding percentage entering the weekend, .975. The Shockers committed five errors, contributing to five unearned runs for Creighton. Errors – and walks – figured into most of Creighton’s scoring, especially in Saturday’s game. Creighton’s error-less defense magnified the Shocker mistakes. Most painfully, the errors (and walks) let Creighton get leads and neutralized WSU’s bullpen. Shocker relievers again starred, with four combining to pitch 9 2/3 scoreless innings. WSU out-hit Creighton 25-18, stole nine bases to its zero, walked 11 times to Creighton’s eight and struck out 12 fewer times than the Bluejays. Both teams scored 10 runs and Creighton won two of three because of timely hitting and Shocker mistakes. WSU blew a chance to clinch the MVC title and build itself a good stretch of baseball after sweeping at Missouri State. It went 1-3 (with a 7-5 loss to Kansas). Had the Shockers gone 3-1, they’re MVC champions and a team with a slim chance to win 40 games. Instead, Creighton almost did to WSU what WSU did to Missouri State. Wichita State’s women’s track and field team finished second by 1.5 points to Indiana State in the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships in Des Moines. Indiana State finished with 166.5 points, ahead of two-time defending champion WSU’s 165. The WSU men also finished second behind Indiana State. The Sycamores men totaled 198.5 points to WSU’s 168.5 WSU’s Tomas Cotter earned men’s Most Valuable Athlete honors after totaling 20 points. He won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Sunday’s 1,500 with a time of 3 minutes, 50.02 seconds. Tanya Friesen totaled 30.75 points to win the women’s Most Valuable Athlete honor. Wichita State’s 6-5 loss to Creighton isn’t a disaster, because the Shockers got help and remain in first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Maybe the Shockers will feel that way by Saturday afternoon when the series resumes. On Friday night, the result felt like a near-total collapse of starting pitching, defense and clutch hitting.
