The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), representing LCBO employees, has filed a gender-discrimination complaint against the liquor retailer with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. Their argument? OPSEU alleges the LCBO is discriminating against women, since 70% of their casual workers — those working less than 40 hours, with fewer benefits — are women. So supposedly this is anti-female? What would the Union like the government to do? Would they agree to a hiring freeze on women, with literally all new hires for casual employment being men until they hit 50/50 male/female parity? They would certainly do that in the reverse if their complaint was that the LCBO was not hiring enough women. By the way, the LCBO says the majority of full-time employees are also female. Would they like the government monopoly to pay women more than they pay the men doing the same job? They would have a hard time defending that scenario, of course. Does the Union believe that women are stupid? That women, but not men, can be tricked into taking part-time work counter to their best interests? According to CouponCabin.com’s Mother’s Day survey, nearly seven in 10 moms would stay home if they could. PRNewswire quotes Jackie Warrick of CouponCabin.com: “Many companies recognize the challenges that working moms face and provide a ...

For years and years, it saw itself as sealed off from the content of human Rights treaties . Indeed there have even been more extreme claims to say that the Articles of Agreement of the IMF free the organisation from the rules of customary international law. This approach from the specialised, function focused IMF, one thought, would not be applied by the more public law attuned European Union institutions. When we look at memoranda of understanding and the design of funding programmes we often see the province of the economist, the market and international relations. Certainly for economists, the application of human Rights law to current macro-economic predicaments is descried as pie in the sky. Yet, before we unveil the new era of technocracy and hand the keys over to the economists, we must test the institutions’ actions against public law values. It is important to note that ‘agreements’ and ‘memorandum of understandings’ often fail to satisfy basic rule of law values, such as clarity, predictability and congruence with the actual terms. At the basic level, a citizens’ (whether national or European) right to reconstruct the decision-making process is conspicuously absent, and often conducted through unprofessional newspaper interviews. If we look at the flow of information over the past number of years we see the communication of ...

Source: www.dailykos.com --- Wednesday, May 15, 2013
Milwaukee workers talk about making ends meet in low-wage jobs. Fast food workers in yet another city have walked out for a one-day strike, seeking better wages and the right to form unions. Milwaukee is the fifth city hit by such a strike in the past six weeks; there as in Chicago, retail workers are also joining the strike. The strategy is the same as in New York, Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit: A one-day strike by as many workers in any given store are ready to walk out, with community support not just at the time of the strike but the next day as workers return to their jobs. The complaints are the same , too: Milwaukee Burger King employee Tessie Harrell says she earned the state minimum wage of $7.25 an hour from 2008 through 2012, even after she was promoted to shift supervisor in 2011. Last year, she got a raise to $8.25 an hour. But she says that's not enough to pay the $650 monthly rent on her two-bedroom apartment and support her six children. "I can't afford to buy my kids shoes," says Harrell, 34, who gets food stamps and $150 a month from her mother. "There's no way I should be struggling to make ends meet." When a worker is on food stamps, that's an employer that is relying on taxpayers to augment wages, to bring workers up to the bare minimum they need to survive. Full-time work at $8.25 an hour—a full dollar above the federal minimum wage—still leaves a family of three below the poverty level. This wave of strikes ...

On Thursday afternoon, Quinn and several other New York City leaders came to NYU to speak out in support of research assistant and teaching assistant collective bargaining Rights. After a round of speeches and pledges of support, the group headed inside Bobst to deliver an open letter to Sexton signed by over 250 state elected officials as well as a petition from over 1,000 NYU RAs and TAs. Lead by the Graduate Student Organizing Committee, a labor Union representing graduate teaching and research assistants at NYU, and long time affiliate the United Auto Workers, one of the top national labor unions in the country, the rally was staged in protest of the benefits cuts and premium hikes made to graduate employee health plans in fall 2012. The volley of criticism rallied protesters outside the main student library. Assemblywoman Deborah Glick criticized the current system as “indentured servitude.” State Senator Brad Hoylman compared NYU to multinational corporations like Walmart. “We want to make academia a profession for everyone in New York, not just those who happen to have a lot of money in their pocket.
