Will Ultra HD be online first, will anyone care?

Source: www.nscreenmedia.com --- Monday, June 17, 2013
The common wisdom is that Ultra HD will be delivered by online video providers like Netflix before pay-TV providers like Comcast. The argument for online first is simply that it will take years for cable, satellite and TelcoTV providers to upgrade physical plant and set-top boxes to support the new TV standard. Online providers rely on broadband and advanced customer devices to deliver. They can leverage the latest advanced codecs like HEVC to squeeze the enormous bandwidth required for 4K resolution onto many existing broadband connections. As well, customer equipment like iPads and PC already have the processing power necessary to render the video, no upgrade required. Announcements by Comcast recently lead me to believe that, when it comes Ultra HD, anything online can do Comcast can do better. But will anyone really care? Comcast announced at The Cable Show that engineers were working on Ultra HD and demonstrated the technology over both standard cable connections and broadband using DOCSIS 3.0. Certainly, delivering Ultra HD over cable connections will require substantial upgrades of the cable infrastructure to support it. Much of the cable network still uses 20 year old MPEG2 technology. That will need to be upgraded to support HEVC in order to deliver a substantial number of Ultra HD channels and the upgrade will take many years. However, chances are that Comcast will never have to make those upgrades. Comcast also introdu ...
