Jacob Bijani was an early Tumblr user. He'd often design theme templates for the platform's blogs, and one in particular caught David Karp 's eye. "I made a weird side-scrolling theme for my blog, which made the rounds and eventually got David to follow me,” the designer told Daily Dot in October . "We emailed a bit and I started doing some freelance work making themes for VIPs on Tumblr. A months after I graduated college in San Diego, David happened to be in town for Webby Connect. We met up for the day, he offered me a job, and I moved to New York a few weeks later.” What was the email that got those conversations started? It was a simple inquiry about an outdated job listing on Davidville, the company Karp created which produced Tumblr. Bijani sent the initial email in May 2008. I made no bones about my opinions after Yahoo ( YHOO ) dropped $1.1 billion in cash for the buyout of Tumbler. The hip, young blogging platform was heralded by some investors as an ambitious effort to reinvent Yahoo under ex- Google ( GOOG ) staffer and now CEO Marissa Mayer. Me? I think the move is dumb. And recently I sat down with Alyssa Oursler of InvestorPlace to talk about why. My list of concerns isn’t new. It includes: Fickle young users suspicious of any advertising and of Yahoo overlords A lack of profits at Tumblr in its current incarnation Overpayment risk, considering no payoff in the near term Struggles with integration to the Yahoo proper Oh yeah, and that whole decline of the portal model and deflationary online display advertising and mobile challenges that Yahoo hasn’t fixed. But what do I know … Yahoo stock continues to climb, mostly thanks to its Alibaba stake and growth abroad. Tumblr and Yahoo could prove me wrong yet again. What do you think about the deal? Regardless of the mixture of responses, Yahoo promised ‘not to screw Tumblr up’ in their agreement, with Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, posting this gif on her personal Tumblr page . What do you think to the acquisition? 2. It seems Yahoo! has been busy this week! In addition to buying Tumblr, it has also redesigned its photo-sharing service, Flickr , offering users up to one terabyte of storage (FYI – 1 TB amounts to over 500,000 original, full-resolution photos, according to Yahoo!) without a fee. The revamp now offers a new app for Android devices and will allow users to post higher-resolution photos and host longer video clips. In a bid to compete against the likes of Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ Photos, and even Facebook, Flickr’s interface has been completely refurbished, looking bigger, neater, and far more appealing than the old photo stream. American internet corporation Yahoo! is to acquire the popular blogging service Tumblr in a deal worth £723m. Marissa Mayer, Yahoo!’s chief executive, said that Tumblr would continue to operate independently after the site’s bosses promised “not to screw it up”. The deal is the most significant made by Mayer since she took over at the company in July last year, she described the move as a “unique opportunity”. She also commented on the sites’ integration, saying: “On many levels, Tumblr and Yahoo couldn’t be more different, but at the same time, they couldn’t be more complementary.” The New York-based blogging site will still be the responsibility of its original founder, 26-year-old David Karp, who expressed his delight at Yahoo!’s backing, saying the site would become faster with increased resources. He also explained that neither party wished to alter the site’s original aims. The acquisition is thought by many to be Yahoo!’s latest attempt to re-capture its former glory as one of the internet’s biggest players. As with Myspace, Yahoo!’s popularity was eclipsed by that of sites such as Google, Twitter and Facebook . steamlord313 : The thing that bugs me about Tumblr’s special brand of condescending “”“social justice”“” is that so many people seem to have completely forgotten the definition of the word “equality” and, time and again, make countless arguments in favor of the superiority of oppressed peoples at the (very derogatory) expense of those who are not oppressed. This, for instance, is what gives feminism a bad name. Groups of self-proclaimed feminists, obsessed with feminine superiority, will make awful generalizing statements condemning men as a gender. Subsequently, groups of (often involuntarily) ignorant men, deprived even of a chance to learn why their views are harmful, take offense and retaliate. This causes the self-proclaimed “feminists” (who in reality are counter-productive to the goal of feminism) to retaliate, thus creating a vicious cycle of misguided people versus misguided people giving their own genders bad names in each other’s eyes. All the while, all of the sensible equality-focused feminists stare wide-eyed and afraid to say anything for fear of being accused of favoring one side over another, when in reality both sides are equally as terrible. This is just one example of why this behavior is toxic, and I won’t even get into how often I see Tumblr users generalizing and condemning cisgender and caucasian people for simply being who they are.
