Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson confirmed Monday that he broke the NFL single-season record with 1,964 receiving yards last year despite playing much of the season with broken fingers. Trying to straighten them things out, Johnson said of the crooked fingers on his left hand. Johnson said he wasnt certain exactly when he suffered the injury. It was never reported by the Lions on their mandatory injury updates. You just think its something thats hurting and you keep playing, Johnson said. During an interview with reporters Monday morning at the teams headquarters in Allen Park, Mich., Johnson also addressed the off-field troubles of former teammate Titus Young. Young remains in jail in Riverside, Calif., after being arrested three times in less than a week. Very tough, Johnson said. We like our athletes big, bold and fearless. We tend to not allow much room for vulnerability. They are however, quite human and as such they to fall prey to the same statistics that provide a snapshot into the sample size of American life. Mental health awareness is gaining more exposure as the taboos and stereotypes that are associated with these various disorders are either shattered or overcome. Recently the plight of former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young has forced even the hardest heart to pray for the Young man’s welfare. The behavior associated around his multiple arrests are not simple cries for help. They are an illogical pattern of behavior that may date back to incidents that occurred during his freshman days at California’s University High School. Young’s father claims that Titus developed an undisclosed disorder after he suffered a concussion during his rookie year in Detroit. But Young’s pattern of reckless behavior caught up with him early and often at each stage of his career. High school discipline led to college discipline when the talented Young once again fought the law and the law won at Boise State. Either Young has a long term problem that has manifested itself continually or there were a series of coincidences that led up to the alleged concussion that the Detroit Lions never listed on their injury report. Former Lions wide receiver Titus Young’s personal issues and arrest have been front page news for the past month now. Young has been arrested three times in the past 15 days, and recently has family acknowledged Young had some mental health issues. Current Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch says that he recently was on the same flight from Miami to Detroit with Young, and the two had an interesting and deep conversation according to Tulloch. The Titus Young story has officially gone from funny to sad to worse. The Press-Enterprise of Riverside (Calif.) is reporting that Young's ex-girlfriend obtained a restraining order against him last week. The order, which was granted May 8 by a judge in Riverside County, requires the former Detroit Lions receiver to stay at least 100 yards away from the woman, who is also the mother of Young's 8-month-old son, Titus Jr. “He would say things like, ‘I understand why O.J. killed his wife.’ He says, ‘We’re always gonna be a family and I’m always going to be his,’” the restraining order request states. “He got mad and yelled at my neighbors and tried to fight multiple people that he doesn’t even know.” [...] Young’s ex-girlfriend said she called police because Young would repeatedly wait outside her Moreno Valley home, and that he threatened and harassed her. “Titus Young Sr. has been clinically diagnosed with a mental disorder and I am afraid of what he is capable of doing,” she wrote in the restraining order request. “He also has been in a mental help facility more than once and still believes that he does not have a problem.” The woman also said in her request for the restraining order that Young frequently talks to himself and goes for long walks without coming back.
