It takes a low key and more personalized approach to a single moment in the life of an artist instead of creating any sort of all encompassing melodrama or pop culture history lesson. It’s a welcome approach that serves the film’s look at a son almost being forced into living up to his father’s legacy, but it’s way too slight and specialized to appeal to many viewers outside of those who really love the music of Buckley and the film’s subject, his son Jeff. Daniel Algrant (directing his first feature in a decade following People I Know ) takes a fictionalized look at then up and coming musician Jeff Buckley (played here by Penn Badgley) as he’s asked to come to New York from L.A. to play a 1991 tribute concert for his father. Struggling enough with his own music at the time, the last thing Jeff wants to do is delve too deeply into the relationship he had with his father. As glimpsed in flashbacks, Tim was a hard liver that really did wrong by his son and his fam ...

The second disc contains nearly two dozen unreleased recordings Buckley made in 1965 with The Bohemians and in 1966 with frequent songwriting partner Larry Beckett. The music on the second disc has remained unreleased until now and provides an unparalleled insight into Buckley’s early development. It opens with 12 songs he recorded in November 1965 with The Bohemians, a group he formed in high school with Fielder, Beckett, and guitarist Brian Hartzler. Recorded live in an Anaheim studio, the originals include early versions of “She Is” and “It Happens Every Time”—two tracks that later appeared on Buckley’s debut. The session also yielded rockers like “Put You Down” and “Come On Over” and the ballads “Call Me If You Do” and “No More.” The nine songs that make up the second half of the disc were recorded shortly before the sessions for Tim Buckley and feature Buckley singing and playing acoustic guitar with Beckett, who recites poetry to Buckley’s guitar on two tracks..." ...

They even got the hair right which is key! I strongly suggest fans of any genre of music pick up Jeff Buckley’s music because it surpasses the name plate of a genre but for those who love to classify—it is pure soul music and his voice is ahhhh…. ...

Greetings from Tim Buckley Explores the Musician’s Conflicts with his Famous Dad

Source: movienewsguide.com --- Friday, May 03, 2013
<img src="http://movienewsguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Tim-Buckley.jpg" & width="150" & height="105" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Daniel Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley is not a definitive Buckley biopic. It is a drama that manages to deliver some surprising lures from within. There are lots of stories that could be told about Tim and Jeff Buckley. One is a versatile folk musician while the younger one is a rocker. Both of them explored other genres and died young. One thing going for Algrant is that he didn’t go the traditional bio route. Instead he focused on the 1991 tribute concert where the movie got its title. It shows the preparations via a backstage point-of-view that has detailed urgency. Playing Jeff Buckley is Penn Badgley, who is popular for his role in TV’s Gossip Girl. Jeff is still a lost and sullen kid who is reluctant to pay homage to a person who abandoned him. His girlfriend (Imogen Poots) helps him push forward in order to play in the event. The movie features flashbacks to formative moments in the life of his father Tim (Ben Rosenfield). Algrant utilizes Tim Buckley’s music through the movie. But the sad news is that Jeff Buckley’s estate didn’t agree to license music for use in Greetings from Tim Buckley. This is the reason why Algrant is pushed to evoke the songs that resulted into awkward tunes. The screenplay feels a bit incoherent in some parts, especially about the fictionalized romance. Badgley gives his all to the role. He is musically and emotionally capable for the job. A highlight of Greetings from Tim Buckley sees him p ...

If nothing else, this movie spotlights the talent of that erstwhile Gossip Girl, Penn Badgley, whose vocals and cheekbones establish him as a genuine star of the big screen. Director Daniel Algrant’s movie was another strong feature at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival after making its debut in Toronto. It is opening in New York this weekend and already available on many video on demand systems. ...
