In effort to curb ongoing market loss to Qualcomm and Samsung, NVIDIA has continued to aggressively upgrade its quad-core Tegra 4 mobile processor. The company on Tuesday announced that its Tegra 4i CPU, a variant of the Tegra 4 that includes an integrated LTE modem , has been updated to support LTE-Advanced networks with speeds of up to 150Mpbs, an increase from traditional LTE speeds of 100Mbps. NVIDIA notes that because of its "software defined radio technology" it can add support for new technologies with a simple software update, making the chip more future-proof than its competitors'. When it debuted at Mobile World Congress back in February, Nvidia's Tegra 4i mobile processor impressed with its ability to reach speeds of 100mbps. Nvidia returned with the Tegra 4i at CTIA 2013 , and somehow managed to boost those speeds even further without altering the structure or hardware of the chip. Thanks in large part to its i500 LTE modem, Nvidia was able to update the chip's software to push the capabilities to Cat 4 150mbps. Even though no marketed phones currently house the Tegra 4i chip, Nvidia demonstrated the full power of the processor while also making calls and streaming video over AT&T's LTE network. Little chip, big power At 40 percent of the size of a traditional LTE modem, the Tegra 4i packs a lot of punch into a diminutive chip. Nvidia attributes this to the Deep Execution Processors design, which offers "fast, high performance" in a highly adaptable modem. During the demo, Nvidia's Phoenix concept smartphone was also tested to show off the LTE-Advanced prowess with special emulation, as there are currently no such networks available. Though the Tegra 4i will be compatible with LTE-Advanced, the chip has also been designed to be backwards compatible with earlier cellular networks. Nvidia’s first integrated smartphone chip won’t just have the latest and greatest Tegra processor; it will support some impressive LTE connection speeds as well. Nvidia has upgraded the radio of its forthcoming Tegra 4i to support download speeds of 150 Mbps, capabilities it began demoing at CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas this week. Nvidia is showing that even though it’s new to the radio silicon market, it’s keeping up with the technical prowess of the competition. The 150 Mbps benchmark is the most cutting edge LTE device currently available (in industry parlance it’s know as category 4 LTE), meaning the Tegra 4i can go head-to-head to with the superchips designed by Qualcomm , Broadcom and Altair Semiconductor . Chinese device maker Hisense is getting ready to launch its first Android tablets in the US. The company’s Hisense Sero 7 Lite tablet hit the FCC last month , and now SlashGear reports that it will be available in the US soon for $99 and up. The company will reportedly also offer a $149 model called the Hisense Sero 7 Pro. That version will have a 7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It sounds a lot like the Google Nexus 7, but this tablet has 8GB of storage instead of 16GB. On the bright side, it has a microSD card slot, a mini HDMI port, and a rear camera (as well as a front-facing camera. Those are three things the Nexus 7 lacks… at least for now . The Hisense Sero 7 Pro is also expected to feature WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software. It’s not clear what sets the Sero 7 Lite and Sero 7 Pro apart, but it seems like a safe bet that the Pro model has a few features which it’s cheaper sibling will lack. NVIDIA has indicated to The Motley Fool’s Evan Niu that it wants to focus on mid-range smartphones rather than fighting in the high-end segment. The company is preparing its Tegra 4i chip to cater the segment but it is still a long time away. “The way that NVIDIA sees it, the high-end smartphone market is totally dominated by Apple and Samsung, both of which use in-house applications processors as much as possible. Apple only uses A-chips nowadays, and Samsung uses both its Exynos chips and Qualcomm’s Snapdragons. These are two OEMs that NVIDIA doesn’t think are worth pursuing,” The Motley Fool noted in a report. According to NVIDIA, the first devices powered by LTE enabled Tegra 4i SoC will be landing the first quarter of 2014.
