But even before those recent moves, more Tech talent has been flocking to New York, said panelists speaking this morning at WSJ Tech Cafe , an event organized by The Wall Street Journal that’s taking place a couple of blocks south of Google’s headquarters in Chelsea. Gary He/Reuters “People are being drawn to New York as a Tech center,” said Serkan Piantino, site director of the Facebook N.Y. office. Facebook had just five engineers in its New York office a year ago, now there are more than 60, said Piantino. Dave Gilboa, co-founder of eyeglass retailer Warby Parker , said that his startup has recruited people from Silicon Valley, and part of the reason was having big companies such as Facebook Google , eBay and now Yahoo establishing permanent presence here. “It becomes an easier conversation, that if it doesn’t work out with our company, there are going to be other options available,” said Gilboa. No one is spared from it, not even ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy who finally had to shift to neighboring country to avoid paying taxes. The latest to experience French examination for imposition of taxes are giant technology companies operating in France, including Apple Inc. , Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc . France is seriously considering imposing tax, which would be widely known as ‘cultural tax’, on the aforementioned technology companies and others so as to fund various cultural projects. It is not new for companies to pay fees in France to propagate art, cinema and music. Most entertainment companies from television segment to radio broadcasting and Internet Service providers are already in the government’s tax net. Origins of Cultural Tax In fact, we can trace origins of cultural taxes in France back to 1960 when the proud European nation opposed to the dominance of the American language and products and introduced various regulations to minimize the process of “ Americanization.” The current report that forms the basis of the new ‘cultural tax’ is called: Culture-Act Two . It was prepared by the former head of Canal Plus television, Pierre Lescure, and showcases “the determined adaptation of the French cultural exception in the face of digital usage is, as someone said, a burning obligation”. This new tax is consistent with th ...

Apple , Google , HP , Intel and Seagate are among the companies that have pledged to donate around $30 million to the Bay Area Super Bowl Bid Committee, the organization leading the charge to host Super Bowl 50, Mike Rosenberg of the San Jose Mercury News reported Monday . Most of the money will go to police overtime and beefing up transportation, but around $8 million will go to local charities, according to the San Jose Mercury News. San Francisco is going up against one other city -- Miami -- for the right to host what will be the 50th Super Bowl in the event's history. NFL owners will cast their final votes on May 21. "We're joining an all-star team of Silicon Valley and Bay Area companies that share the same history and sense of purpose,'' Todd Bradley , an executive vice president at HP, said Monday at an event in downtown San Francisco held to discuss the Super Bowl bid, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News. While this looks like a classic East Coast vs. West Coast showdown on paper, the South Florida Super Bowl committee, which has raised $21 million to date, doesn't seem confident about their chances, Douglas Hanks of the Miami Herald reported last week . This is understandable since the Bay Area Super Bowl committee ha ...

The Associated Press explains that the proposal “… handed to President Francois Hollande Monday, outlines a 1 percent tax on the sale of Internet-compatible devices, targeting companies such as Google, Apple and Amazon.” The money yielded from this tax, mostly aimed at Apple’s iPhone and iPad, and Google’s Android products, would go to cultural industries ai ...
