An impressive sight over London yesterday evening (c1800Z) was a Fairey Swordfish and Consolidated Catalina battling the westerly gale in formation with 4 helos (SeaKing, Lynx and Merlins I think) at low level up the Thames. Saturday was spent reading. I have alumni access to the university’s library, which includes the ebooks, so I’ll sometimes go to Ebrary, search for something, and read a bit. Or I’ll go to a category and just see what’s new – the ebook browsing equivalent of hitting the ‘I’m feeling lucky’ button on Google. Which is how I stumbled onto Richard Ellis’ Swordfish: A Biography of the Ocean Gladiator . I must admit that a book about Swordfish – all about Swordfish – is probably not the first thing that comes to mind for Saturday morning reading. But it was there, so was I, and the cover was nice…so I got going. Things I’ve learned: Swordfish can warm their brains. They have no teeth as adults, but do as juveniles. They’re rather stabby. They are riddled with worms and parasites. They may be subject to hormonal rages. They like to bask in the sun. The only thing more delightful than learning unexpected things about Swordfish was how terribly earnest the book was about them. The author is dead serious about the subject; he likes them a lot, and he wants you to know about them. Nothing in the book is tongue in cheek, and it’s charming. Now I know quite a lot about Swordfish; I’m not likely to ever need to learn more about them, but I’m fairly confident that I’ve covered all that I will probably need to know about them in my lifetime. Happy Friday, everyone! I know we’re all going to have some moments today where it seems like we’re just not quite going to make it through this week. But take heart, brothers and sisters! The weekend is just around the corner, and to make matters better, you are not this Swordfish, which is having pretty much the worst day ever, caught between a rock and a hard place. Or the fish equivalent of that, anyway, which I guess is “a fishing boat and a sharky place.” Fisherman Matt Watson probably thought he and his crew were having a pretty good day filming The Ultimate Fishing Show when they hooked a huge Swordfish near New Zealand. What started as good footage, though, turned downright amazing as a mako shark in the area decided that the Swordfish in question wasn’t leaving the ocean before it took its pound of flesh. Well, probably a couple pounds, judging by this video. The Swordfish, meanwhile, just cannot believe the day its having. We know that feel bro. We should also point out that props are due to Watson and his crew for getting most of the rest of their mangled catch on board. I don’t know about the rest of you, but if a shark starts eating anything that I wanted, I have a blanket policy of just letting the shark have it. I’m in no hurry to fight a shark over a meal.
