According to multiple sources , Microsoft is planning a 7.9-inch Surface tablet that it expects to launch in late June. Additionally, Samsung will be supplying the displays for the tablet. Consumers have been moving away from the standard full-sized 10-inch Tablets and towards smaller form factors which are more portable. Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s 7.9-inch iPad Mini have been major hits. Samsung recently unveiled an 8-inch Galaxy Note that can make calls. Digitimes’ Aaron Lee and Joseph Tsai report that Microsoft is expected to announce second-generation Surface Tablets at the company’s Build Developer Conference, which will be hosted from June 26-28, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. Lee and Tsai note that since Microsoft only achieved sales of 1.5 million units for its first-generation Surface Tablets (one million Surface RT and 500,000 Surface Pro), realizing barely half of its original expectations of 3-4 million units, the company is taking a cautious attitude over promotion of its second-generation models. They report that in addition to North America, Microsoft has also been expanding its market reach for Surface, with the Surface RT already available in Malaysia and to appear in Mexico at the end of May. The Surface RT will also become available in Korea and Thailand in June, while the Surface Pro will start selling in Australia and Austria in May and June for Korea, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore and Thailand. Lee and Tsai say that Microsoft has retained most of its component suppliers from the first-generation Surface models for the second-generation tranche, with Pegatron Technology again the devices’ assembly manufacturer, with components supplied by several firms, noe of which could be persuaded to comment about Surface shipments. According to new IDC figures, Microsoft shipped just 900,000 Surface Tablets in the Q1. Most of the Tablets sold were Surface Pro, which are more powerful (and more expensive) as it appears Microsoft has left its crippled Surface RT to die. Despite the lackluster quarter, Microsoft managed to take 1.8 percent tablet market share. Apple dominated, with 40 percent share, with Samsung in second at 18 percent share. When adding in Windows 8 Tablets not sold by Microsoft, the numbers jumped to 1.8 million and 3.7 percent share. As IDC concluded , "Windows-based Tablets continue to struggle to gain traction in the market." The research firm notes that Microsoft needs to move to a smaller 8-inch form factor.
