This nails it. I’m an infectious disease epidemiologist who studies sexually transmitted infections. The press typically FUBARs science and health reporting. A little while back some hysteric said “This is worse than AIDS.” It’s bad news, but it’s not. Gonorrhea, like many bacterial infections, has been evolving resistance to each new antibiotic we treat it with for decades now. We’re on the last one right now, and in just a couple of people, it’s resistant to pretty much everything. That’s bad. But it’s not the AIDS epidemic. Read on. ...

Children born to mothers with gonorrhoea have a 50% chance of developing eye infections that can have blindness as a consequence. Although discovered in 2009, to date the new gonorrhoea Superbug, known as HO41, has not killed anyone or spread outside Japan. Action to curtail its global spread is imperative. In the United Kingdom, Health delivery experts continue to be concerned by the destructive nature of gonorrhoea which has become increasingly difficult to treat. It is believed that this strain may eventually become incurable in the next few years. England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Dav ...

The survey of 176 acute-care hospitals looked at rates of infection or colonization in patients from three bacterial microbes that have become immune to the killing effects of most or all antibiotics — MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), VRE (vancomycin-resistant Enterococci) and Clostridium difficile. “And that by itself is a substantial burden of disease,” said principal researcher Dr. Andrew Simor, head of infectious diseases at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. “About one in 12 adults … are going to have one of these three antibiotic-resistant organisms, and clearly the rate would be even higher if you started to add on other resistant organisms that we were not able to measure,” Simor added. Patients can carry, or be colonized by, a microbe like MRSA, but have no signs of active disease, while those who are infected are sick and have symptoms. (All patients with C. diff in the study were infected and had diarrhea and other symptoms.) However, those who carry a bug can go on to become infected. For example, from one-quarter to one-third of patients colonized with MRSA become infected with the Superbug, which can attack the skin and soft tissue, cause a form of pneumonia or invade the b ...

The strain, called HO41, has been placed in the Superbug category along with other antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), CNBC reported. LIKE BlackDoctor.org on Facebook! Get Your Daily Medicine…For LIFE! No deaths from HO41 gonorrhea have been reported, but this is “an emergency situation” and “it’s getting more hazardous” as time passes, according to William Smith, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors. “This might be a lot worse than AIDS in the short run because the bacteria is more aggressive and will affect more people quickly,” Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine. “Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days,” he explained. “This is very dangerous.” The new gonorrhea strain, has been found in Hawaii, California and Norway. Worldwide, nearly 30 million people have died from AIDS. Christianson believes the effect of the gonorrhea bacteria is more direct. ...
