We are doing this project because sadly a lot if the younger generations don’t even know what The Stonewall Riots are. Do you? the Stonewall Inn is a bar in New York that was run by the mafia, frequented by homosexuals and other “social deviants” and often the target of police harassment . In June if 1969 the bar was once again raided. The weary patrons were mad as hell and they weren’t going to take it any more. They fought back and continued to fight. the Stonewall Riots are what many consider the launch of the modern gay rights movement . This important piece of American history should not be let to fall to obscurity. Will you please share our campaign and help bring the story of Stonewall to life in this unique comic book history format? An answerphone greeting message from Stephen Fry, a box for 13 at Michael Bublé’s London show and a banquet for 10 at Babylon are just some of the lots on offer in Stonewall’s Summer Party silent auction. The silent auction is open online to bids from everyone and is in aid of Stonewall’s Education for All campaign which tackles homophobic bullying and celebrates difference in Britain’s schools. Other lots up for grabs are a limited edition print from Thomas Wolski, a plaster cast and acrylic piece by Nancy Fouts and a bespoke garden re-design by Dean Grant. The line-up of lots is completed by an exploding jelly experience at your own event courtesy of Bompas & Parr. The auction closes online at midday on Friday (June 21), ahead of the sold-out party that evening which takes place at the Kensington Roof Gardens, where the auction winners will be announced. by Michael Cirigliano II Marking the end of their 36th season, the Stonewall Chorale—the nation’s first LGBTQ chorus—presented an intense reading of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, using its alternate orchestration of duo pianists and percussion ensemble. Although an avocational group, the chorale has built a reputation for committed performances, with a particular focus on delivering new music and increasing audience engagement. And as evidenced by the enthusiastic sold-out crowd Saturday night at the Church of the Holy Apostles, it is clear that the chorus’ footprint in the LGBTQ community is incredibly strong. Leading the 60-member choir was Artistic Director Cynthia Powell, who meticulously directed the proceedings while communicating a great sense of rhythmic clarity from the combined forces. Given the percussive vocal writing Orff dictates throughout the work, Powell’s choice of the piano/percussion accompaniment was wise, allowing the smaller chorus to project while never forcing their sound; the result was an articulate presentation of the wordy texts and a resonant, crystalline timbre. Both the bombastic material and the meditative chants were given room to breathe, and despite Powell quickly moving between the 25 movements with an acute brevity, the pacing was never forced—each phrase was pleasantly released and allowed the church’s acoustics to add polish to each movement’s final moment. As a 44-year-old man born in 1969, I can only imagine what it was like for those who were in New York City during the Stonewall riots that year. This is why it is wonderful to be able to talk to someone who witnessed it firsthand: Donald Reidlinger, a retired New Yorker lives with his partner of 28 years, Ron Glick, and remembers being a teen during the summer of '69. Gregory G. Allen: I can't thank you enough for speaking to me and sharing the photo of you from 1969. Each June we celebrate gay pride because of a major occurrence in the West Village of New York City that year. Tell us what you were doing during that time in your life? Donald Reidlinger: I had just finished my sophomore year at a Catholic high school in Brooklyn and was about to turn 16. At the time I didn't consider myself gay but bisexual. I had girlfriends, partially because it was expected, but I was truly fond of them. It was a widely held belief that boys "experimenting" with each other was a phase, but I knew deep down for me it wasn't. In brief public remarks, Mr. Obama responded that the U.S. is going to need better cyber defenses “even as we negotiate with other countries around setting up common rules of the road.” Rules of the road?
