Lumbosacral transforaminal epidural steroid injections are equally effective for treatment of lumbosacral radicular pain in the obese compared to non-obese population: A pilot study.

Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- Sunday, May 05, 2013
Lumbosacral transforaminal epidural Steroid Injections are equally effective for treatment of lumbosacral radicular pain in the obese compared to non-obese population: A pilot study. J Back Musculoskelet Rehabil. 2013 Jan 1;26(2):183-8 Authors: McCormick Z, Plastaras C Abstract BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Current evidence suggests that lumbosacral transforaminal epidural Steroid injection (TFESI) is an effective treatment for lumbosacral radicular pain. However, practitioners may be reluctant to attempt this intervention in obese patients because of a perceived reduction in the chance of providing pain relief due to the increased technical difficulty of TFESI in individuals with a larger body habitus. No study to date has compared the effectiveness of TFESI in groups stratified by BMI. We report pilot data addressing whether lumbosacral transforaminal epidural Steroid injection is as effective in treating lumbosacral radicular pain in the obese and overweight population as it is in the non-overweight population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study consisted of 9 normal weight (18.5 < BMI < 25), 9 overweight (25 < BMI < 30), and 6 obese (BMI > 30) patients who presented with lumbosacral radicular pain and received a TFESI. For each group, percent reduction in pain and the proportion of individuals with a 50% or greater reduction in pain 2-4 weeks after TFESI was determined. RESULTS: Comparing the overweight and obese groups to the normal w ...

Source: www.johnshopkinshealthalerts.com --- Wednesday, May 01, 2013
Back pain is the number-one reason people visit their doctors, and epidural Steroid Injections have been a mainstay of treatment for short-term pain relief for decades. Epidural Steroid Injections seem to be most effective for people who have "radicular" pain, or pain that radiates from the spine to a leg or an arm, caused by a herniated disk. Even so, relief is often only temporary, and Injections should be limited to no more than two or three a year. ...

My daughter was attending a vocational school for cosmotology during her senior year in high school to prepare herself for Aveda Salon. In February of that year all her hair fell out (universalis was the diagnosis) recieved from Dr. Hordinsky (head of Dermatology at the Univerisity of Minnesota) She was also seen at the Mayo Clinic. Both advised her it was an autoimmune issue. Its five years later and she decided to give Steroid Injections a try. Its been 4 weeks and HALLILEUYA she is responding. She just got a bill in the mail and her portion of the cost is in excess of $500.00 Insurance is not covering what we were told they would. She is scheduled to have full head Injections next Tuesday and we have no idea how much it will cost. She is a working her way through her 4 year degree as a Cosmotologist of all things. If anyone has any information to help us pay for her dream of a full head of hair please guide me in this direction. Thank you so much for your time and consideration !
