Source: front.math.ucdavis.edu --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
The ionization dynamics of pure He nanodroplets irradiated by EUV radiation is studied using Velocity-Map Imaging PhotoElectron-PhotoIon COincidence (VMI-PEPICO) spectroscopy. We present photoelectron Energy Spectra and angular distributions measured in coincidence with the most abundant ions He+, He2+, and He3+. Surprisingly, below the autoionization threshold of He droplets we find indications for multiple excitation and subsequent ionization of the droplets by a Penning-like process. At high photon energies we evidence inelastic collisions of photoelectrons with the surrounding He atoms in the droplets. ...

Source: front.math.ucdavis.edu --- Thursday, May 09, 2013
Consider an $\R^d$-valued branching random walk (BRW) on a supercritical Galton Watson tree. Without any assumption on the distribution of this BRW we compute, almost surely and simultaneously, the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the level sets $E(K)$ of infinite branches of the boundary of the tree (endowed with its standard metric) along which the averages of the BRW have a given closed connected set of limit points $K$. This goes beyond multifractal analysis, which only considers those level sets when $K$ ranges in the set of singletons ${\alpha}$, $\alpha\in\R^d$. We also give a 0-$\infty$ law for the Hausdorff and packing measures of the level sets $E({\alpha})$, and compute the free Energy of the associated logarithmically correlated random Energy model in full generality. Moreover, our results complete the previous works on multifractal analysis by including the levels $\alpha$ which do not belong to the range of the gradiant of the free Energy. This covers in particular a situation until now badly understood, namely the case where a first order phase transition occurs. When $K$ is not bounded and $E(K)\neq\emptyset$, the packing dimension of $E(K)$ equals the dimension of the whole space; this is a new phenomenon. As a consequence of our study, we can also describe the whole singularity spectrum of Mandelbrot measures, as well as the associated free Energy function (or $L^q$-spectrum), when a first order phase transition oc ...

Source: atomicinsights.com --- Sunday, May 05, 2013
If I lived in New York City, I would be campaigning against the installation of large, high pressure gas pipelines and for the continued operation of the well-built and well-maintained Indian Point Nuclear Power Station . I would also campaign for the construction of additional nuclear plants. In my opinion, nuclear generated electricity is more compatible with densely populated cities than natural gas pipelines. The San Bruno explosion mentioned in the video has been nearly forgotten by most who were not directly affected. Of course, it did not occur when the pipe was new; it took several decades worth of deterioration and high pressure operations before that event happened. However, the explosion was not unique; there have been numerous similar explosions widely distributed around the United States and the rest of the world. High pressure gas pipelines represent a hazard that needs to be understood and acknowledged. Explosions and fires usually end quickly and harm only those nearby, but the harm is real and immediate. In contrast, Fukushima proved to the people who paid close attention that nuclear plants can be protected with enough layers so that even catastrophic failures and core melting can occur without injuring the most exposed plant workers. The probability of any harm to the uninvolved public is acceptably close to zero. The people who produced the above video would probably recoil at my suggestion to discourage the e ...
