The Material That Protects The Space Shuttle From Heat Is Amazing

Source: www.businessinsider.com --- Wednesday, May 22, 2013
This is incredible. Even after being in an 2,200 degree Fahrenheit oven for hours, the material that make up the Space shuttle's thermal tiles dissipates heat so quickly that it is safe to touch (at the corners) while it is still molten — basically lava —inside. This crazy material is needed because when it reentered the atmosphere, the Space shuttle would heat up to a searing 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit due to air molecules impacting its outer shell.

Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- Thursday, May 16, 2013
<img src="http://i.huffpost.com/gen/1140757/thumbs/o-SNC-570.jpg?5" & width="150" & height="112" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Nasa has started full testing on a remarkable next-generation 'Dream Chaser' mini Space shuttle, developed by a private company. The Sierra Nevada Corporation Dream Chaser is a sleek new Space craft reminiscent of the classic - now retired - Space shuttle. It is reusable, has wings that allow it to fly back to Earth, can carry seven astronauts and runs on a hybrid engine partly powered by laughing gas. Designed to launch atop an Atlas V rocket , the craft could see Nasa not only launch its own explorers into Space again - instead of continuing to rely on ageing Russian Soyuz technology - but also return them home without ditching in the sea (or the Kazakh desert). Oddly enough the little-known project is actually based on an idea originally developed by the Soviet Union , which Nasa reverse-engineered into the abandoned HL-20 concept, later picked up by Sierra Nevada. And while it's only one of several craft being developed by private companies vying for Nasa funding, along with projects by SpaceX, Boeing and others, it is the only true 'Space plane' in development. The Dream Chaser recently arrived at Nasa's Dryden Flight Research Center in California. There are no guarantees that it will ever be fully built, let alone make it to Space, but if the tests are successful Sierra Nevada could receive the funding needed to push the 'Dream' towards reality. The tests, part of Nasa's Commercial Crew Program to develop a craft to take as ...

I found one here thingiverse.com/thing:1966 , but it seemed to be a bit to smooth. So I googled a little and found some fitting object in the 3D galery. I resized it and repraired it using netfabb and after a short time I printed one with a length of about 105 mm. The upper wing is a bit too thin to be printable precisely, but it is a little more detailed than the mentioned Space shuttle. But the real cool feature: It is glowing in the dark using phosphorescent PLA. The model you can download here is scaled up to a length of 135 mm hoping that this size is big enough to print a better wing. Called Buran (Russian for blizzard or snowstorm), the program was launched by the Kremlin as a reaction to NASA's Space shuttle and an attempt to gain an edge in Space against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" Strategic Defense Initiative. It was also an attempt to fulfill the Soviet Union's dream of reusable spacecraft and payloads, ideas that predated the American Space program. A massive effort began. Over a million and a half people worked on the multi-billion dollar project, while researchers developed new, elaborate schemes for Russian Space exploration. Among other tasks, Russian scientists hoped that the Buran would be able to carry the Space station back to Earth, and -- the reported reason for its inception -- to allow the USSR to carry out military attacks from Space. And from Maciej Ceglowski's epic takedown of the shuttle program , this little tidbit: The Soviet shuttle, the Buran (snowstorm) was an aerodynamic clone of the American orbiter, but incorporated many original features that had been considered and rejected for the American program, such as all-liquid rocket boosters, jet engines, ejection seats and an unmanned flight capability.
