Sony: PS4 Won’t Require PS Plus for Auto-Updates, Movie & TV Services

At their E3 2013 Press Conference , Sony revealed that PlayStation Plus would be required for online play using the PS4. It was an announcement that, under different circumstances, might have elicited a negative reaction, but given the way Sony packaged the reveal most gamers didn’t seem to mind. However, since Sony more or less slipped this announcement under the radar, they didn’t take the time to outline what specific online services will be locked behind PS Plus’ pay wall. Microsoft , for example, requires Xbox Live Gold for all of their online services, including Netflix and Hulu Plus. While it must have been tempting for Sony, they have decided not to follow Microsoft’s lead by locking all of their online services behind the PS Plus subscription. We have a few images to show you now, which gives you an exact look at how the PS4 differs to the Xbox One in size. It goes without saying that a lot of consumers are pleasantly surprised at just how compact the PS4 is compared to the Xbox One. After consumers labelled the Xbox One a glorified ‘VCR’ box after Microsoft’s first Xbox One unveil, many gamers were fearing that Sony were also going to show a large console when unveiling the hardware for the very first time during E3. However, Andrew House took to the stage at Los Angles and showed a system that actually looks very small – especially compared to the original fat PS3 model in 2006. We already know the official measurements of the PS4 thanks to a recent press release by Sony. The console will measure up with a width of 27.5cm, a height of 5.3cm and a length of 30.5cm. Now, with some stats disclosed by PSMania, we also know how the Xbox One compares. Microsoft has come under some pretty heavy fire recently, mostly surrounding issues with its “online check-in” system and its used games restrictions . For Sony, this has been nothing short of awesome news. Sony has poked at Microsoft’s new restrictions more than once, and made it clear they aren’t planning any similar kind of move. This means no online check-in. No special DRM or trade-in policy either. That said, there is no guarantee that there won’t be some PS4 games with DRM in place. According to Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s Jack Tretton, it is technically possible that a 3rd party developer COULD utilize such a system, if they so please. “… we welcome publishers and business models to our platform. There’s going to be free-to-play, there’s going to be every potential business model on there. And again, that’s up to their relationship with the consumer…we’re not going to dictate that.” “The DRM decision is going to have to be in the hands of third-parties. That’s not something we’re going to dictate, control, mandate or implement.” Should you be alarmed? No, not really. This is pretty much how DRM works on consoles right now.
