Budget cuts have reduced department coverage to only 5 days per week. An unidentified woman was physically and sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, Michael Bellah, after calling 911, only to be told that it was “unfortunate” that there were no officers to help her that day. “Uh, I don’t have anybody to send out there,” the 911 dispatcher told the woman. “You know, obviously, if he comes inside the residence and assaults you, can you ask him to go away? Do you know if he’s intoxicated or anything?” The woman told the dispatcher that Bellah previously attacked her and left her hospitalized a few weeks prior to the latest incident. The dispatcher stayed on the phone with the woman for more than 10 minutes before the Sexual Assault took place. “Once again it’s unfortunate you guys don’t have any law enforcement out there,” the dispatcher said, according to Oregon Public Radio. The woman responded: “Yeah, it doesn’t matter, if he gets in the house I’m done.” ( source ) According to reports, when Bellah got into the house he choked and sexually assaulted the woman. Although it did little good to the victim, he was later arrested. Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilberson was relatively unsympathetic. “There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t have another victim. If you d ...

Because they have no place in the greatest military on Earth.” Obama’s remarks were a doubling-down of his vow on May 7 that Sexual offenders would face accountability for their actions. That same day, a study released by the Pentagon indicated more than 70 daily reported Sexual assaults against service members and more than 26,000 reported cases in 2012. The month of May 2013 has also seen at least three officers in charge of programs tasked with preventing such assaults be arrested for stalking or Sexual Assault charges. According to NBC News, Obama also used the speech to touch on topics like the recent allegations of misconduct against the Internal Revenue Service and to decry the federal sequester, the latter of which was underscored by the cancellation of the traditional fly-by by the Blue Angels squadron, which has been shelved for the remainder of 2013 for budgetary reasons. (Via The Baltimore Sun ) “They threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong. That’s why we have to be determined to stop these crimes. Because they’ve got no place in the greatest military on Earth.” (Via The Washington Post ) Obama’s speech comes two days after an Army sergeant was accused of secretly videotaping female cadets at West Point. The New York Times points out Sexual Assault within the military has become an increasingly prevalent problem. “A Pentagon study this month estimated that as many as 26,000 members of the military were sexually assaulted last year.” The recent rash of Sexual Assault scandals has prompted lawmakers to take action. NBC points to Sens. Claire McCaskill and Kirsten Gillibrand, who have each recently introduced legislation calling for stricter punishments for soldiers convicted of Sexual harassment. The president also focused his speech on maintaining trust in public institutions, emphasizing how the actions of a few individuals within an organization can tarnish the reputation of the whole. “Obama said misdeeds and ...

Kwame Holman reports on efforts to subdue the crisis. As White House Advisor on Violence Against Women, Lynn Rosenthal is closely involved in the effort to get the U.S. military services to "exponentially step up their game" against Sexual assaults in the ranks as President Barack Obama demanded early this month. "We're anxious to see the services get that message to every single level," Rosenthal told the PBS NewsHour Wednesday. The Defense Department survey released this month showing instances of unwanted Sexual contact within the services rose by more than 35 percent from 2010 to 2012 -- to some 26,000 incidents -- still reverberates at the Pentagon, the White House and in Congress with members of all the institutions promising action. The survey estimated 12,100 of the 203,000 active duty women and 13,900 of 1.2 million men on active duty were sexually assaulted. But fewer than 3,400 victims were willing to come forward and report the crimes to their chains of command. Rosenthal said sharp statements from Mr. Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in reaction to the report can have an effect on the problem even though it has had such long standing in the military. In response to these reports, the Defense Department published a revised Sexual Assault prevention and response strategic plan. And this week, the House Armed Services Committee released legislative language as part of the FY2014 National Defense Authorization Act , which includes a number of bipartisan reforms to the way Sexual Assault cases are reported, investigated and punished in the military. Here's a look at the dozen bills (and a resolution) that Congress is considering related to Sexual Assault in the military -- in no particular order.

Source: jacksonville.com --- Friday, May 24, 2013
As retired chief petty officer, I am embarrassed by a recent report on sex abuse in the military. The military justice system is full of seemingly unfair practices. The commanding officer determines what to charge (with assistance from a prosecution office). It seems weird not having the police and prosecutors doing this. If you transfer the victims for their safety, it is seen as retribution. read more ...

Due to the nearly 800 reports of Sexual assaults throughout the Air Force in the past year, the group has primarily focused on finding new ways to communicate and raise awareness about this issue among the junior enlisted force. more... ...

Good Grief. Obama Lectures Naval Academy Graduates on Sexual Assault

Source: www.thegatewaypundit.com --- Friday, May 24, 2013
This was just weird. Barack Obama lectured the class of 2013 today on Sexual abuse in his commencement speech at the US Naval Academy. CNN reported: A rash of Sexual assaults in the armed forces undermines Americans’ confidence in the military, President Barack Obama told newly commissioned officers at the U.S. Naval Academy Friday. “Those who commit Sexual Assault are not only committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong,” Obama told the graduates, who were commissioned as Naval ensigns and Marine Corps second lieutenants. “That’s why we have to be determined to stop these crimes. Because they have no place in the greatest military on Earth,” Obama continued. The president’s remarks came amid mounting outrage over Sexual abuse cases in the armed forces. Figures show the rate of assaults in the armed forced increasing, and some top officers are under fire for condoning such acts. It’s not clear if the rate of Sexual violence is any higher in the military than in the general public . Nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men experienced Sexual violence other than rape at some point in their lives. Of course, the far left believe rape and abuse is what gets soldiers out of bed in the morning. ...
