Richard Shelby's (R-Alabama) blanket hold on all of the Obama administration nominations awaiting U.S. Senate confirmation. Shelby wants the military to revise the bidding process on a defense contract that could bring an estimated 1500 jobs to Alabama. But as Marcy Wheeler points out, if Shelby gets his way, many of the jobs under the contract will be farmed out to Europe. The key issue is that Shelby wants the Air Force to... ...

State Senator Iris Martinez (D-Chicago) yesterday introduced legislation to require retroactive sex offender registration in Illinois. The measure, House Bill 3084 , would mandate a person to register as a sex offender who was not previously required to register. If Matinez’s legislation becomes law, previously unregistered sex offenders would have five days within to register. A message to Martinez for comment was not immediately returned. This article will be updated as soon as Martinez’s response is received. Stay tuned. ...

Source: www.mountainofevidence.com --- Tuesday, February 09, 2010
Last week, GOP Senator Richard Shelby filibustered all nominees to posts in the Obama Administration, in order to secure a basket of earmarks for favored corporations in his home state of Alabama. Yesterday, he announced he would be dropping that filibuster and that it was all a stunt to attract attention. So, which is it, Dick? Are GOP filibusters over real issues or not? The GOP has been playing martyr in Congress, claiming that Democrats are presenting bills and nominees that are too far left. Democrats, or at least the Obama Administration, have been tacking farther and farther to the right, becoming constantly more obsequious, hoping that someday, Rush Limbaugh will pat them on the head and tell them what nice boys they've been. An event that is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Richard Shelby's admission that his filibuster was a needless stunt represents another huge PR opportunity for the Democratic Party. Historically, Democrats stand aloof and miss these opportunities, and there is every reason to think they will miss this one. Two things happened here - First, this is an admission that the GOP is abusing the filibuster for things that aren't serious. Second, a GOP Senator got out of line and put his own party in a bad position. Both of these create weak spots that Democrats can and should hammer like crazy. However, the Obama Administration seems addicted to weak-kneed pandering, and so will no doubt fumble the opportunity. Shelby's ...

He has proven he is not a Little ‘r’ Republican in the final two years of his tenure in the Senate. Senator Bond fought against the stimulus bill, but then behind closed doors he negotiated a few stimulus pet projects. This kind of two-face representation in Washington DC with Republicans must end, and it’s the main reason I have decided to oppose Billy Long for Congress in Missouri’s Seventh Congressional District. After the stimulus money was passed, Bond sacrificed more Missouri sovereignty by making Missouri more dependent on the federal government with $50 million of his own stimulus projects for the state. And what did Bond have to lose? He isn’t running for reelection. No Democrat could attack Bond for his double standard. These are the type of Republicans we need to force out of the Republican party. This is the same kind of behavior that lost elections for Republicans in 2006 and 2008. You can’t say you oppose government spending, and then once you are defeated go along with the Democrat’s plans looking to fund your own pet projects. You must keep your fingerprints off the bad deal, even if it means missing out on $50 million. This is why many people see Republicans as big spenders as well and it’s got to stop. ...

So far, only Senator Rupp has responded, this after a second attempt to glean answers from both candidates. Without further preamble, here are the Senator's answers 1. Do you believe that the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land" and that the Bill of Rights acknowledges our birthrights? Yes. It is the foundation of this country and the supreme law of the land. 2. If so, should these rights be proactively protected from infringement by all levels of government, including city, county and state? Yes. No level of government is exempt from the freedoms granted to citizens in the constitution. 3. Please give some examples of gun laws you consider constitutional. Conceal and Carry, The Castle Doctrine 4. Please give some examples of gun laws you consider unconstitutional. National registries trigger locks, ammunition registries. 5. Does the right to bear arms include the right for any peaceable citizen to carry them concealed without a permit, as in Vermont? Yes. 6. Richard Shelby of Alabama has released the "holds" he had placed on every one of President Barack Obama's nominees, his office said Monday. "The purpose of placing numerous holds was to get the White House's attention on two issues that are critical to our national security — the Air Force's aerial refueling tanker acquisition and the FBI's Terrorist Device Analytical Center," Shelby spokesman Jonathan Graffeo said in a statement released to news organizations Monday night. Shelby wants the tanker and the new FBI explosives center to be built in Alabama. Senators frequently block individual appointments, but Shelby's blanket hold was unusual. Now that he has gotten Obama's attention, Graffeo said, "Sen. Shelby has decided to release his holds on all but a few nominees directly related to the Air Force tanker acquisition." White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday, "If you needed one example of what's wrong with this town, it might be that one Senator can hold up 70 qualified individuals to make government better because he didn't get his earmarks." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said last week that Shelby's move was holding up about 70 appointments, including a critical top Defense Department position overseeing deployments to the war in Afghanistan.
