The marine mammal education and protection organization Seal Sitters was on the job on Sunday when, after getting a call around 10:30 am about a Seal Pup on Point Williams, where Colman Pool is located, the first responder confirmed a Pup was present on the beach and put up yellow tape. The tape establishes a safe zone for the seals who come to rest on the beach. The Seal Sitters volunteers estimated that the Pup was approximately 9 months old. "Pups are weaned at 4-6 weeks of age and often struggle to survive their first winter and spring," said Seal Sitters Robin Lindsey, and reach sexual maturity in 3 to 7 years. They can be found along the Pacific coast of North America from Alaska to California. They are also found in Asia and Europe. When they do come on shore it is to rest and warm up. Their presence on the beach is not unusual, even for many hours. Their mother may be out gathering food or it's possible the Pup is weaned and is on its own. Seal Sitters advises that you stay 100 yards away and that you should never feed, touch or pick up a Seal. Also please keep dogs away from seals on the beach. If you see a Seal, or other marine mammal that appears stranded on West Seattle beaches they ask that you call their hotline 206-905-7325(Seal) so they can respond and provide some watchful eyes. The Aquarium of the Pacific on Wednesday proudly announced the arrival of a bouncing baby boy--a harbor Seal Pup that becomes the first male Seal born at the Long Beach facility. Not surprisingly, the adorable little pinniped looks a lot like his parents, Shelby and Troy. The new Pup entered the world on May 1 weighing about 30 pounds. He'll be placed on display at the Seal & Sea Lion Habitat exhibit in mid- to late summer. Meanwhile, AOP is asking for the public's help in naming the baby Seal through its Adopt an Animal program, which allows individual or groups to adopt animals at a minimum cost of $25. Those who enter the program before June 30 will be allowed to suggest names, and the aquarium staff will decide which of those names will belong to the Seal Pup. Shelby has been at the aquarium since 1998. Troy, which had been the facility's only male harbor Seal, has been there since 2007. This is Shelby's second Pup. From our Aquarium News feed The Aquarium of the Pacific staff is celebrating the birth of the first male harbor Seal to be born at the institution. The Aquarium’s harbor seals Shelby and Troy are the parents of the Seal Pup, which was born on May 1, 2013, and weighed approximately 30 pounds at birth. The Pup will remain behind the scenes with his mother until he is ready to be moved to his home in the Seal & Sea Lion Habitat. Shelby came to the Aquarium in 1998. Troy, the Aquarium’s only male harbor Seal, came to the Aquarium in 2007. Most seals give birth to young starting at four to five years of age. Shelby is seventeen years old and is considered a mature mom. The male harbor Seal is her second Pup. Shelby gave birth to her first Pup, a female named Bixby , in April last year. The public has the chance to help name the Pup through the Aquarium’s Adopt an Animal program by adopting a Seal at the $25 level or higher before June 30, 2013. Aquarium staff members will then choose one of the suggested names. “Parents” at the $25 level will receive an adoption certificate, photo, fact sheet about the animal, invitation to a special event, a subscription to the Adopt an Animal e-updates, and more.
