Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports By now you’ve heard that the Seahawks have lost backup TE Anthony McCoy for most of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. He had surgery this week, and it’s going to be a long 8 months of recovery for McCoy. For the Seahawks, exactly how big of a blow this is seems to be up for debate. My take on McCoy, and one shared by the metrics on site’s like Pro Football Focus, is that he’s an overrated player who’s performance doesn’t match his playing time. After talking with both Brian from Hawkblogger.com and Danny from FieldGulls, it seem that I am in the minority though. Both of them see McCoy as a decent blocker, so clearly opinions on McCoy are divided. Either way, the loss of McCoy opens up a roster spot that needs to be filled. After thinking about it for all of 2 seconds, I had 2 thoughts on the idea: Don’t be surprised to see the Seahawks sign a veteran free agent TE in the coming days. Don’t be surprised if that veteran doesn’t end up making the roster at the completion of training camp. Both Darren Fells and Sean McGrath are guys that I think could make the roster, especially if Luke Willson can claim the #2 spot in training camp. Luke Willson is going to be make the roster; that’s seemed ...

So the Seahawks have a receiver from the University of Idaho, Justin Veltung, who hardly anyone has heard of but can jump like a wallaby. Pete Carroll is busy scribbling corner end zone fade plays after viewing this video, in which the undrafted rookie on Thursday did a 56-inch standing box jump . No, he didn’t get a running start — zero to 56 inches from a standing start. To give you an idea of how amazing that is, the Guinness Book people list 58.27 inches as the world record in the standing box jump, accomplished by Jonas Huusom of Denmark in 2011. Veltung is damn close to that, and he’s probably not done growing his leaping muscles yet. Veltung only has 62 receptions for eight touchdowns in his career, but with Seattle’s talented group of receivers, he should learn fast. But if football doesn’t work out for him, there’s always super villainy. ...

The former Texas A&M Aggie possesses a powerful build, and breaks tackles with ease, but he’s also surprisingly elusive in the open field. Unfortunately, Michael was rarely used in the passing game in college, and thus protection isn’t one of his strong suits. He also loses some of his trademark speed when making cuts and is not an explosive player in small spaces. It’s Michael’s off-field antics that pose the biggest threat to him succeeding on the next level, with attitude problems to spare. The Trashman’s Fantasy Outlook for Christine Michael: Seattle has an embarrassment of riches on it’s hands as Michael is stepping into one of the stronger backfields in the NFL. Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin are already doing a fantastic job toting the rock, and with Michael currently being a liability in pass protection, chances are slim that he sees the field anytime soon. But the truth is that Michael is a better nat ...

No word on the exact mechanism of injury, but McCoy had surgery yesterday and is expected to be out until at least November, which probably represents a best case scenario. This week has become the Week of the Achilles, as this is the second prominent name to suffer this injury in the NFC West, as Micheal Crabtree is expected to miss at least 6 months as well with the same injury. Both Crabtree and McCoy underwent surgery in a very timely fashion, which should help speed up recovery time and allow both guys the opportunity to return sometime around Week 11/12 (based on reported recovery time-table and barring setbacks). Not much was expected from them as they decided to start a rookie quarterback in Russell Wilson. Well, Wilson made a huge name for himself in guiding the Seahawks to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. Seattle would go on the road and defeat the Washington Redskins before falling short in the closing seconds against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Divisional Round. With Wilson and the offense ever-improving, and one of the best defenses in the league, the Seahawks are primed to contend for a Lombardi Trophy in 2013. These players absolutely love playing for Pete Carroll, who made a big splash this offseason and traded for Percy Harvin to give this offense another weapon. There’s no question that this is going to be one of the teams to beat in the NFC. Seattle will be up against the 11th-toughest schedule in 2013. Its opponents combined for a 130-122-4 record and a 51.6 winning percentage last season. The Seahawks are set to do battle against the AFC South and NFC South divisions. They also will take on the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants due to finishing second in the NFC West division in 2012. The oddsmakers at Cantor gaming are absolutely huge on the Seahawks in 2013. They are an underdog in just one game, which is a 2-point dog at San Francisco. They are a pick ‘em in one as well, which will be their rematch at Atlanta in Week 10. I certainly be ...

The injury occurred during organized team activities, and surgery was already performed on the tear. The Seahawks used a lot of two-tight end sets last season, earning McCoy plenty of playing time alongside Zach Miller. McCoy played in all 18 games and had 18 catches for 291 yards and three touchdowns. He played in all of the Seahawks' games in 2011 as well. For more on McCoy's injury visit Seahawks blog Field Gulls If McCoy does miss six months, he will not return until November. That makes him a likely candidate for the physically-unable-to-perform list, which would make him ineligible to play for the first 12 weeks of the season, but would open up a spot on the Seattle roster. The Seahawks drafted Like Willson to be the team's third tight end, but he will have to take on a bigger role from Week 1 with McCoy out. Willson ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.46 seconds at his pro day and is also a pitcher in the Blue Jays organization, so his athleticism isn't a question, but he will have to adjust to the NFL game quickly now with McCoy sidelined.

Source: www.yardbarker.com --- Friday, May 24, 2013
The Seattle Seahawks appreciate athleticism more than almost any other team in the NFL, and their newest acquisition is proof of just that. The Seahawks signed undrafted rookie wide receiver Justin Veltung on Thursday, adding onto an already talented young corps on offense. But it wasn’t Veltung’s production that attracted the Seahawks, instead his most attractive attribute just so happens to be his ability to jump high — really, really high. Veltung played four years at the University of Idaho, catching 62 passes and eight touchdowns for his career, but his most impressive number is 56 — as in, he can jump 56 inches in the air. That’s right, Veltung can do a 56-inch standing box jump, which is impressive for any player never mind one who’s just 5-foot-11. Fortunately, for our collective viewing pleasure, Veltung’s incredible leaping ability was caught on video. Check it out in the video below. Have a question for Luke Hughes?
