With every major festival that arrives there’s more chances for hopeful filmmakers to ink deals that would put their films in front of paying audiences, so of course with the Cannes Film Festival in full swing there’s a whole smorgasbord of distribution news. First up is Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation” follow-up, “The Past.” Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the U.S. rights, continuing the company’s relationship with Farhadi -- they released “A Separation” stateside. Starring Bérénice Bejo, Ali Mosaffa and “A Prophet” star Tahar Rahim, “The Past” tells the story of Iranian man who leaves his French wife and children to return to his country, and all the ramifications that decision has on the family. Though our man in Cannes was let down some by the third act, he still found the film worthwhile, calling it “mature and real in a way that dramas rarely aspire too.” Though no details are confirmed, it’s very likely “The Past” will follow... ...

Blood Brother, which won the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the 2013 SUNDANCE Film Festival, sneaks up on you. What at first seems like a fairly typical personal documentary, quickly becomes something else entirely, as Steve Hoover is dragged into the complicated life of his best friend Rocky who has devoted his life to serving HIV positive children in India. I spoke with Steve about his best friend the Rocky, about making a film that is suddenly talked about as important in the battle against aids in the developing World, and what its like to win the Grand Prize at SUNDANCE. 1. Tell me about Blood Brother? Blood Brother is an intimate portrait of Rocky Braat, my best friend. A few days ahead of its international debut in Cannes, The Weinstein Company has finally unveiled the trailer for Ryan Coogler's "Fruitvale Station," which took home both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in SUNDANCE's U.S. narrative section this winter (when it was known simply as "Fruitvale"). The film -- which is based on the true story of a young man who was shot to death by a police officer at the Oakland, California Fruitvale rapid transit station -- stars Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer and Melonie Diaz and received rave reviews at SUNDANCE on top of its prizes.
