(Image Credit: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports) Ryan Vogelsong fractured two bones in his right hand and dislocated his pinkie finger on Monday, landing the right-hander on the disabled list. The injury took place in the 5th inning of Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals. Vogelsong was at the plate in the bottom half of the inning before taking a pitch directly off his hand, prompting San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy and team trainers out to the plate. Vogelsong would end up being pulled from the game. An MRI exam on Tuesday revealed the extent of the damage and Vogelsong underwent surgery. He’s expected to miss the next four to six weeks. Vogelsong hasn’t gotten off to an impressive start to the 2013 season, posting a 2-4 record and 7.19 ERA through his first nine starts (46.1 IP). He’s struggled to keep runners off base, unlike the past two seasons with the Giants. Vogelsong’s story is well known – career minor leaguer, heads to Japan, reinvents his mechanics, and is an All Star upon his return stateside – and the freak injury just adds to the story that has been his career. It remains to be seen who will replace Vogelsong in the Giants’ rotation. Minor leaguers Chris Heston and Mike Kickham could be options, as are relievers Chad Gaudin and Shane Loux . With a scheduled off day built into their schedule on May 28, the team coul ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
After Ryan Vogelsong fractured his pitching hand on Monday night, the San Francisco Giants are faced with the decision of who will replace him in the starting rotation. Despite the suddenness of the injury, it is likely that the leading candidates to fill Vogelsong ’s spot have already been placed under the microscope. The right-hander’s early-season struggles (1-4, 7.19 ERA in 9 starts) have been well-documented , and manager Bruce Bochy had recently broached the topic of skipping Vogelsong ’s turn in the rotation. So now that the unfortunate injury has forced the Giants’ hand, who is most likely to become the team’s new fifth starter? Since Vogelsong is expected to miss only 6-8 weeks, the replacement almost certainly will come from within the organization. *All statistics courtesy of MLB.com and MiLB .com and current through May 20. During last night’s game between the San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals, pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, broke his hand while at the plate and will now be sidelined for 4-6 weeks after having surgery on Tuesday according to ESPN . “I’ll be back, no question about that,” said Vogelsong, who waited to greet his teammates after Monday’s win, his right hand wrapped. “It stinks. It stinks because it had been so rough, to go out there and feel like my old self again.” Vogelsong, who has had a rough start to the season, was has having his best outing thus far, pitching a shutout after five innings. X-rays showed that the pitcher had two broken bones in his pinkie and a dislocated knuckle. ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
The designated hitter has been in the American League since 1973, and it probably won't be much longer before it's in the National League, too. Now that interleague play is an everyday thing, it's just not practical for MLB 's two leagues to play by different sets of rules. But having pitchers bat for themselves in National League games (and in games at National League parks) isn't just impractical in this day and age. It's also as dangerous as it's ever been. Isn't that right, Ryan Vogelsong ? If you missed it, the San Francisco Giants veteran right-hander took a wild swing at an inside fastball from Washington Nationals reliever Craig Stammen on Monday night. Instead of hitting the bat, the pitch hit Vogelsong on his moneymaker. Pain ensued. Lots of it. And eventually the word came down from the Giants: two broken bones and a dislocated joint in Vogelsong 's pinkie finger. He's expected to be out four to six weeks. Yeesh . That was the perfect word to describe the situation as it was unfolding on Monday night. It's always a bad time whenever a pitcher gets hurt doing something other than pitching, but Vogelsong 's injury felt like a particularly hard punch to the gut, because he was in the middle of his best start all season. Through five innings, he had held the Nats scoreless on three hits and a walk. It took about, oh, five seconds after Vogelsong 's first grimace for the DH talk to start. Jason Collette of Baseball Prospe ...

The San Francisco Giants caught a bad break on Monday night in their game against the Washington Nationals. Though the Giants did shut out the Nats, 8-0, to snap a three-game losing streak, the defending World Series champions lost starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong with a broken finger. Vogelsong was hit on the right pinkie finger while swinging at a pitch from Craig Stammen, suffering two fractures and a dislocated knuckle in the finger. CSN Bay Area's Joe Stiglich reported that the initial diagnosis is for Vogelsong to be out for four to six weeks, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the team will have a more definite timetable after Vogelsong has surgery to place pins in the finger. (Vogelsong's wife tweeted that he would be sidelined for six weeks. But factor in rehabilitation and Vogelsong having to build his arm strength back up and it could be a longer time frame.) (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez) Last season, the Giants have five pitchers make 30 or more starts. No team has done that in back-to-back seasons in about 30 years. And the Giants won’t be doing it again. Ryan Vogelsong, in the midst of easily his best start of the season, broke two bones in the pinkie of his pitching hand when he was hit by a pitch while swinging at the ball. Vogelsong will have surgery on his hand Tuesday and is expected to be out four to six weeks. That would put his return date in early July. “It stinks,” Vogelsong said. ” Especially because it’s been so rough. To go out there and feel like my old self again … it stinks.” Vogelsong pitched five shutout innings against the Nationals, giving up three hits with two strikeouts. After Vogelsong’s last start in Toronto, there was talk about taking him out of the rotation. After five innings Monday, it appeared that Vogelsong had put to rest that discussion. Now, the Giants must consider options. Here are a couple. CHAD GAUDIN: Gaudin was signed last offseason to work as a long man out of the bullpen — something the Giants have gone without frequently in recent seasons — and a spot starter. Gaudin has been very good out ...

Against the ailing Washington Nationals , the Giants were also glad to see Ryan Vogelsong pitching extremely well after struggling mighty over the beginning of the season. Vogelsong’s great night ended with one swing of the bat, not by the Nationals, but by himself. While taking an at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning, he tried to fight off an inside pitch. In doing so, the ball caught him in the right hand and the results of that are less than ideal for the Giants; Vogelsong has a fractured right hand and, according to early reports, will be out for six-to-eight weeks. Before the injury, Vogelsong was dealing. Through five innings he had allowed just four base-runners on three hits and one walk. He also had yet to allow a run. Considering how awfully he has been pitching this season, that would easily qualify as his best outing of the season, even if it ended prematurely. Including the win and nice outing from Monday, Vogelsong’s numbers this season have been abysmal. He has just a 2-4 record in nine starts and has pitched just 46.1 innings this season, meaning he’s lasting just over five innings per start. He also has the highest ERA of his career at 7.19 and a poor 1.73 WHIP. More troubling is that his walk rate is at 3 ...

Michael Kickham Should Replace Ryan Vogelsong for the San Francisco Giants

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Monday, May 20, 2013
Ryan Vogelsong looked as though he had finally figured things out on Monday night for the San Francisco Giants . After a brutal start to the season, Vogelsong cruised through five scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals to lower his ERA from 8.06 to 7.19. Vogelsong 's dreams of a recovery from his brutal beginning to the season were then shattered along with his right hand. Vogelsong was struck with the ball while taking a swing during his at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle , Vogelsong will likely be out for four to eight weeks with a fractured right hand. Vogelsong 's wife, Nicole, confirmed via Twitter that he will undergo surgery Tuesday and be out for six weeks. The Giants don't have an effective, experienced starter whom they can turn to in the minor leagues. Long reliever Chad Gaudin could be an option to replace Vogelsong given his experience as a starter. However, removing him from the bullpen would weaken that unit without definitely upgrading the rotation. Gaudin has a 4.72 career ERA in 409.2 innings as a starter. The Giants could seek an alternative outside of the organization. However, with more than two months until the trading dea ...

Giants ' starter Ryan Vogelsong followed up on a 12-pitch, 1-2-3 first of his own with an 11-pitch, 1-2-3 second after which [counts on fingers] he'd retired six straight Nats to start the game. Hunter Pence hit a one-out single to center off the Nationals' starter in the home-half of the second for the first hit by either team. The Giants' right fielder decided not to test the Nats' right fielder Bryce Harper's arm on a second-straight single by Brandon Belt in the next at bat, settling for advancing to second in front of Andres Torres , and Torres hit an RBI double to left to drive Pence in and make it a 1-0 game early tonight in the Giants' home. A Brandon Crawford groundout to second brought in the second run, 2-0, before Duke retired the opposing pitcher to end a 17-pitch frame at 27 pitches overall after two. Zach Duke lined to left for a two-out single in the Nationals' third, collecting the first hit of the game off Vogelsong. The second hit, as it often does, came in the at bat immediately following the first, when Denard Span lined one right back at the Giants' starter and up the middle of the infield for a single of his own, but Steve Lombardozzi popped up on ...
