Ryan Nassib has been a member of the New York Giants for less than a month, but the spotlight will inevitably shine on the former Syracuse quarterback since he’ll be backing up Eli Manning and is likely the next signal-caller of Big Blue. The fourth-rounder recently reflected on being the newest quarterback on the Giants. Your initial thoughts on being drafted by New York: “Eli Manning and coach [Tom] Coughlin. He’s a Syracuse guy, and Eli’s the face of the organization, starting quarterback, two-time winning Super Bowl champ.” Your thoughts on Coughlin: “I think of him on the sideline just from game day just from seeing him on TV and stuff – that very stern look. He really means business, and he’s a great coach from what I hear. I love him so far and look forward to working with him.” Your greatest influences throughout your football career: “My biggest influence was probably my father just because he played in college and he knew and he saw that I really was passionate about the game. And he did everything he could to make sure that I got the best I could be and always pushed me in a good way.” Who you would like to model your career after: “Quarterback, I guess I would have to say…Joe Montana. Frank Victores-USA TODAY Sports It might have come as a surprise to some when the New York Giants drafted former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib in the fourth round on the NFL Draft. The Giants felt so good about Nassib, they actually traded up in the fourth round in order to get him with the 110th overall pick. The natural question immediately became what do the Giants have in mind for him? Obviously he’s not going to supplant Eli Manning as the starting quarterback. Two Super Bowl victories have a way of buying you some time, and Manning is still at the top of his game at 32 years old. However, Nassib very well could end up at number two on the depth chart with only veteran David Carr in his path. Considering that some draft experts (namely ESPN’s Todd McShay ) had Nassib going as high as number eight overall to the Buffalo Bills , it’s a veritable steal for the G-men. Although Manning is the current leader in consecutive starts at quarterback with 135, Nassib is a nice insurance policy if something were to happen to him. The fourth-round draft pick from Syracuse came up horribly short on a long go pattern during Friday’s start to the two-day minicamp for rookies and free agents . He later lacked touch on a pass over the middle and then threw an interception. First-day jitters was the best way to describe it. They were gone Saturday when Nassib showed why the Giants’ made a trade to move up six spots to grab a potential successor to Eli Manning. Nassib hit a long pass to Brandon Collins, made a couple of other perfect throws and showed good command in running an offense that he’s still learning. Along with Nassib, Syracuse teammate Justin Pugh was at the two-day minicamp. Big Blue drafted Syracuse offensive tackle Justin Pugh in the first round. “Yeah. I definitely felt a little bit more comfortable as these practices have been going on,” Nassib said Saturday after the morning workout. “I’m starting to get the terminology down. While many projections estimated that Nassib could be picked in the first round of the NFL Draft , he fell into the fifth round. While a first round signing bonus would’ve been worth millions of dollars, his signing bonus will be under $100,000. Though Nassib was surely a big loser in the NFL Draft, the team that drafted him, the New York Giants certainly won. The going rate for an average backup quarterback in the NFL is often over $2 million a year, and Nassib – if he pans out to be at least a backup caliber player – will be a huge discount for the Giants. There is a strong precedent for teams without a clear need at quarterback to draft falling signal callers in the draft. The most obvious example is the Green Bay Packers drafting Aaron Rodgers as an heir-apparent to Brett Favre . Rodgers sat and learned, and he’s now arguably the league’s best quarterback. Other teams, notably the New England Patriots , have enjoyed drafting QBs as assets. Matt Cassel filled in for an injured Tom Brady , and developed enough trade value to be moved.
