Now that the NBA Draft deadline has passed, we now know which college players will return to school for another year. ESPN.com published their early preseason All American teams for 2013-14. Russ Smith was named to the first time while Chane Behanan received third team honors. Russ Smith, Louisville : Actually, “duh” will be a running theme for the early portions of this list. Like Smart, Smith was just too obvious to even consider for longer than, like, half a second. (It might not even have been that long.) He was the leading scorer on the defending national champions! Of course he’s going to be a preseason All-American. Duh. Thing is, I’m not sure the wider public really realizes just how good Smith was last season. Indeed, I remain convinced that Smith’s struggles in the Final Four and his very visible Russdiciulous fugue state in Louisville’s five-overtime loss to Notre Dame in February — as well as how much of his value came on the defensive end — essentially turned a significant portion of the casual college hoops viewing public (and voting media) off to the idea that Smith might well have had the best individual season in the college game. But for as good as Trey Burke was, that idea is worth considering, because at the very least it helps us put expectations for Smith’s senior season in context. Rick Pitino had a press conference this afternoon to officially introduce new assistant coach Mike Balado and name the team captains for next season. Seniors Luke Hancock and Russ Smith have been named your team captains for 2013-14. Hancock was a team captain on last year’s championship team along with Peyton Siva. The George Mason transfer went 5 for 5 from 3-point range and finished with 22 points in the championship game against Michigan. He was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, the first reserve to take that award. Russ Smith announced last week that he would return to Louisville for his senior season after considering entering the NBA Draft. Smith told Pitino that he wanted to be one of the leaders on next year’s team. Smith led Louisville (35-5) with 18.7 points per game this season, including 22.3 in the NCAA tournament. Fame isn’t everything, at least that what Louisville’s 6-foot-1 guard Russ Smith believes. Smith, who was expected to enter this year’s NBA Draft, announced yesterday that he’s staying in school for another year and that he will play another year with the Cardinals before turning pro. According to Smith declarations, he needs some extra time to develop his game before joining the largest and most popular professional basketball league on the planet. His comments contradict the declarations made by his father right after the Cardinals won the NCAA championship against Michigan. Minutes after his son had won the national championship in Atlanta Russ Smith Sr. told the media that his son Russ will turn pro and that he was ready to enter the NFL draft. But just yesterday, Smith denied this statement, and informed the media that he is passing on the NBA draft to return for his senior season. Smith said he shared his thoughts with team coach and mentor Rick Pitino, whose resume’ includes coaching the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. Chane Behanan took the advice from coach Rick Pitino that he should return to school instead of jumping to the NBA in a similar manner that Terrence Williams once did his junior year. There was no counter argument made on why he should try, only a nod of acceptance and a “ok coach.” The feedback on Gorgui Dieng ’s draft probability was so overwhelmingly positive, he’s considered a lock to be taken it the first round. That was the only question that needed answering on whether or not Dieng stayed in the draft. He officially goes out a champion at U of L (and finished second in the school’s all-time blocks list behind Pervis Ellison ). Russ Smith ’s situation is far more complicated than both that of Behanan and Dieng. (It should be noted that regardless of Smith’s status, the Cards backcourt will be fine next season. By all accounts, Chris Jones will be a playmaker like Peyton Siva with a better jump shot. Anton Gill and Terry Rozier developed backcourt chemistry playing together this past season at Hargrave Military Academy.) Smith would likely be on all sorts of preseason all-American lists not to mention a national Player of the Year candidate if he returns for his senior season. But his take is his stock may drop with another year. If he’s considered a second rounder now, there’s no guarantee that by returning he’ll become a first rounder next season. It is my honor to announce that Louisville’s Russ Smith is the winner of the 2013 kenpom.com Player of the Year award . Smith posted a 109 offensive rating while using a whopping 32 percent of Louisville’s while he was on the floor. He also played a key role in the Cardinals’ defense, which was rated the best in the land in adjusted defensive efficiency. After looking at shot chart data from last offseason, it seemed like a reasonable conclusion that it would benefit Louisville if Smith shot less this season . Smith did shoot slightly less, but mainly he elevated the Cardinals by making more of his many two-point attempts, approaching the D-I average in shots within six feet (53.7% vs. the national average of 54.5%) and two-pointers outside of six feet (33.5%, exactly the national average). Overall, Russ raised his two-point accuracy from 37.9% last season to 45.8% this season. Why wasn’t Russ considered for any other national awards? This is a difficult question to answer. It’s interesting that Russ Smith’s offensive numbers are nearly identical to Evan Turner’s 2010 season (109 ORtg/32% usage for Smith vs. 109/35% for Turner) Turner was consensus POY, while Russ couldn’t make second team All-American. Two things that I think voters failed to consider were Russ’s production at the free throw line and his low turnover rate.
