Potential Buffalo Sabres Coaching Staff Under Ron Rolston

Source: sabrenoise.com --- Thursday, May 09, 2013
<img src="http://cdn.fansided.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/12/files/2013/05/70755341-300x186.jpg" & width="150" & height="98" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" /> Just a few short days ago, Ron Rolston was named the 16th head coach in Buffalo Sabres history. A move that gave off mixed emotions to Sabres fans, was a smart one indeed. Rolston is known to be a good teacher, and being able to develop young talent. With top prospects ready to make the jump to the NHL, this is a perfect fit for Rolston and the Sabres organization. There are just a few questions still left unanswered. Will Rolston keep the current coaching staff together? Or will he assemble his own staff? The current staff of assistant coaches consists of James Patrick, Kevyn Adams and Teppo Numminen. Rolston will have tough decisions whether or not to bring in his own staff. James Patrick was Lindy Ruff’s man, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Patrick were to go wherever Ruff ends up. I don’t understand why Kevyn Adams is even a coach with the Sabres. Adams was an average player at best during his career, and has accomplished nothing since being named an assistant in 2011. It would make complete sense for Rolston to replace Adams with a more experienced and qualified assistant. Teppo Numminen deserves to stay an assistant in Buffalo. He had a great career as a player, and one would assume that he will play a vital role in recharging the career of Tyler Myers. There are some options that Ron Rolston has if he were to bring in his own coaching staff. His brother, long time NHL forward known for his booming shot, Brian Rolston woul ...

Some folks were happy that Rolston was getting a real shot with a young team, but the more vocal majority were disappointed that the Sabres made the safe choice in Rolston, rather than conduct an extensive search for the best candidate. Yes, the Rolston announcement is not exciting. The most common words I've seen that have been used to describe it are safe, uninspired, mediocrity, and familiar. The adjective most folks are alluding to with those words is really "bad". They think it's a bad hiring. However, it's the last word in that list - familiar - that is one which shouldn't come with negative connotations. Yes, Rolston's promotion was the safe play, safe because he is familiar to us and to the organization. Sabres fans so desperate for more change (of which there has actually been an astounding amount over the past two seasons) are forgetting a few key points as they rant against the "same old Sabres." The team actually played pretty well under Rolston. The Professor went 15-11-5 in his 31 games with the Sabres, which works out to a .565 points percentage, up from the team's .500 points percentage over the course of all 48 games, and putting them just behind the 8th place Islanders who had a .573 points percentage. Players showed a more consistent effort under Rolston, an ...

Source: sabreshockeycentral.com --- Tuesday, May 07, 2013
Many fans thought that when Ron Rolston was named the interim head coach of the Buffalo Sabres, he would be just that. Following the regular season, many people were speculating as to who the new Sabres head coach would be, but not many felt it would be Rolston. Following today’s press conference, there now is no doubt that Ron Rolston is the new head coach of the Buffalo Sabres. In the coming hours and days, many different people will give their input on whether or not Rolston is the right man for the job but looking back on Rolston’s career track record and the Sabres current direction, there might not be a better man for the job. Rolston began his head coaching career when he joined the United States National Team Developmental Program (NTDP) in 2004. In that first season coaching the NTDP, Rolston coached the U-18 team to the Gold Medal in the World U-18 Championship. That team would feature six NHL first-round Entry Level draft picks including Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel, Panthers forward Peter Mueller, Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson, and Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson. That team also included current Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe. The following season, Rolston coached the NTDP’s U-17 team that would go on to yield 9 first-round NHL Entry Level draft picks, including Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk, Predators forward Colin Wilson and Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. When the aforementioned group of playe ...

Buffalo Sabres Keep Ron Rolston as Head Coach

Source: www.bettingonhockey.net --- Tuesday, May 07, 2013
The Buffalo Sabres and general manager Darcy Regier believe that last season’s interim head coach, Ron Rolston, is the guy to lead them toward their goal of a Stanley Cup. His interim tag was removed on Tuesday and he was named the 16th bench boss in team history (via Sabres.nhl.com ). There are many angles to this development, but likely the most important one is the inferences that can be made from the club retaining Rolston’s services. The first, and probably the biggest departure from the status quo through the Regier -Lindy Ruff years, is the likelihood of the team being amongst the youngest in the league. Rolston was brought in as the AHL coach in what the Sabres touted as “Sabres University” and his role was stated to be that of a teacher. If he’s remaining with the Sabres, they must see his teaching chops as necessary, which suggests that the team is going to be extremely young next season. That isn’t much of a stretch considering the position the Sabres find themselves in roster-wise before the draft. As it stands, the Sabres are likely to open up training camp with Mikhail Grigorenko , Marcus Foligno , Johan Larsson , Mark Pysyk , Joel Armia , Brayden McNabb, Corey Tropp , Zemgus Girgensons and Matt Hackett in the mix. You could make an argument that as many as nine of these guys could make a serious push to make the opening-night roster, so having a teaching coach like Rolston may be more beneficial than a guy who i ...

He is the 16th coach in the team’s history. “For me it’s both exciting and humbling to be the head coach of such a storied organization, especially in the city of Buffalo and what this team means to the city,” said the 46-year-old Rolston. “For me, coming in as an interim coach has allowed me the opportunity to get familiar with the organization and the players. The capabilities and potential here are very exciting for myself. I’ll certainly take great pride and work extremely hard for the organization to get to where we need to go, and where we all want to go.” Sabres GM Darcy Regier said he made the right choice to lead the club. “I think that, starting with when he took over the hockey club, I was very impressed with the work he did individually and with the players,” Regier said. “I think that Ron has prepared himself very well over the last 20-plus years. He is very prepared, and has really touched the game in a lot of different areas from junior-aged players, collegiate, AHL professionals, and now the National Hockey League.” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved ...

This will be Ron Rolston’s first opportunity to coach an NHL franchise full-time, but he is not new to coaching. Rolston spent seven seasons with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program where he became the first coach in team history to win three gold medals at the IIHF Championship. He would go on to coach the Rochester Americans for two seasons where he tallied a 63-44-17 record. Rolston will be in charge of developing one of the youngest teams in the National Hockey League into a perennial Stanley Cup contender, which seems like a task Rolston is ready to take on. Stay tuned to Sabres Hockey Central for the latest on this developing story. // // // ...

Since taking over in February, Rolston compiled a 15-11-5 record in 31 games with the team. Apparently, it was a strong enough showing to convince management in Buffalo to name him the 16th head coach in franchise history. Moving forward, Rolston will be at the helm of an assumed rebuild for the Sabres. It remains to be seen what type of talent he will have, as rumors continue to swirl about the futures of No. 1 goaltender Ryan Miller and leading scorer Thomas Vanek . With both players entering the final years of their contracts in 2013-14, the potential of offseason trades has been discussed. General manager Darcy Regier and president Ted Black have stated that the franchise will look to develop talent through the draft . With that in mind, it's not hard to imagine a scenario where either one -- or potentially both -- of Miller and Vanek are moved for any kind of assortment of picks and/or young prospects. In one sense, this potential scenario could allow Rolston to develop a team of his guys, so to speak. In another sense, it might leave him with a far less talented roster to work with. Regier and Rolst ...
