Former Idaho coach Robb Akey is suing the school seeking back payment. (Grant Halverson/Getty Images) Former University of Idaho football coach Robb Akey filed a lawsuit against the school seeking payment of 1/3 of his salary, reports KREM 2 News . Akey was fired in October 2012 after a 1-7 start to the season and after the team was routed 70-28 at Louisiana Tech . The Vandals finished 1-11. Akey was hired in 2007 and had a 20-50 as head coach of the Vandals. His best season was 2009 when the team went 8-5 and won the Humanitarian Bowl. His contract was set to expire in December 2014. He made a base salary of $165,796. “All I’m looking for is getting the money I earned. I’m not looking for anything more than that. I just want a fair resolution,” Akey said. “If I had coached four more games, they would have had to pay me a third of my salary. You lose a third of your salary it affects your ability to feed your family, so it’s a little disappointing,” Akey said in November. Idaho hired Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino in December 2012 as their next head coach. ...

The Idaho Vandals -- yes, that's a real college football team -- have been trying to secure a spot in pretty much any conference that will take them. Unfortunately, nobody wants the Vandals, who will be one of only two teams left in the zombified WAC after this season. That's probably still no excuse for head coach Robb Akey to resort to name-calling. The Associated Press reports that Akey made the following comments on Thursday: "We are the unwanted red-headed stepchild, no offense to any redheads," Akey said. "Nobody seems to want the Vandals right now." Presumably in response to a bunch of creepy red-heads who got up in arms and were probably all like "MEEP MEEP MEEP MEEP MEEP" (I just assume all icky red-headed people are like Beaker from the Muppets, only not funny), Akey followed up with this apology on Monday: Akey: "I had no intention of offending anyone with my comments .. Probably that fat kid from The Sandlot and The Big Green stood on his lawn with a sign that said "END READ HED HAIGHT" until Akey was forced to apologize. Idaho Vandals football is going through some tough times. The program is nowhere near the level of in-state rival Boise State and now it is heading to independent status starting in 2013 since the Western Athletic Conference is abandoning football for the time being. No conference wants the team. Head coach Robb Akey, who is trying to improve a team that went 2-10 in 2011 and has just one winning season in his five years at the helm (8-5 in 2009 with a Humanitarian Bowl victory), said in an Associated Press article from last week: "We are the unwanted red-headed stepchild, no offense to any redheads," Akey said. "Nobody seems to want the Vandals right now." "I promise you that's got a chip on my shoulder," Akey said. Apparently that joke didn't sit well with some individuals. On Monday night, Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman tweeted the apology Akey issued for the joke: Akey: "I had no intention of offending anyone with my comments ..
