That all changed when I married my husband who is half Japanese. He would happily live all of his days without bread as long as he had a nice bowl of Rice. While white Rice was perhaps a preference in certain Asian dishes, we both enjoyed brown Rice for it’s hearty, nutty flavor. ...

Source: Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering --- Wednesday, June 19, 2013
Date/Time: 06/18/2013 01:00 PM Location: 200 Biomedical Sciences Building Abstract: The occurrence of admixture between Neandertals and modern humans has been a controversial subject in human evolution research. The sequencing of Neandertal and other archaic genomes has shed new light on this old debate and has demonstrated that such admixture occurred and has left its imprint on our genomes. Though we are now confident that some portion of our genomes were inherited from Neandertals, it is still unclear exactly where in the genome that ancestry resides and what effect it has had. My research is aimed toward localizing and characterizing Neandertal ancestry in modern human genomes and understanding the functional implications of such variation. I will present my work on two genes our lab has discovered with evidence of Neandertal ancestry and my future plans for discovering positively-selected Neandertal variation and characterizing its functional effects. ...

Loreto Pagarigan, Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 12’s research and development for Rice focal person, said Wednesday they are currently promoting the utilization of Rice varieties that had been tested as tolerant to the changing weather patterns and extreme climatic conditions. “These are varieties that are tolerant to wet and dry field conditions and also resistant to some pests that usually come out in a certain period,” he said in a statement. For irrigated areas, Pagarigan said they are mainly recommending the NSIC RC 283, which can post an average yield of 6.4 metric tons (MT) per hectare, grow up to 104 centimeters (cm) and mature in 110 days. NSIC stands for the National Seed Industry Council, which replaced the Philippine Seed Board based on the provisions of Republic Act 7308 or the Seed Industry Development Act. ch_client = "kitoyski"; ch_width = 250; ch_height = 250; ch_type = "mpu"; ch_sid = "Chitika Default"; ch_color_site_link = "1C691F"; ch_color_title = "1C691F"; ch_color_border = "FFFFFF"; ch_color_text = "FFFFFF"; ch_color_bg = "FFFFFF"; Aside from NSIC RC 283, he said local farmers may use NSIC RC 240, which can grow up to 107 cm and post an average yiel ...

Source: seeaimeecook.blogspot.com --- Tuesday, June 18, 2013
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fGI2XuPeEvE/UcEA1EbYonI/AAAAAAAACiI/SJtuhMDNGEs/s1600/brazilian_opt.jpg" & width="150" & height="226" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Y'all... I love love love Rice - any kind, any flavor, any style. Doesn't matter. In a perfect world, all meals would be accompanied with Rice. So when I say that this is the BEST white Rice I've ever tasted, it means a lot. This isn't your normal Rice. Oh no. There is nothing bland or 'eh' about this Rice. It's so good, you'll be wishing you just ate 4 big bowls of it for dinner and left behind the entree. Instead of simply adding white Rice to a pot of boiling water, you first brown the Rice alongside onions and garlic and then you add the liquid. Such a simple tweak that pays off BIG. Give it a try the next time you're serving up a side (or entree!) of Rice! Brazilian White Rice 2 tablespoons onion, minced 2 cups long grain white Rice 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 4 cups hot chicken broth (use the microwave and a glass measuring cup!) Place the Rice in a fine mesh colander and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Set aside. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook the onion for one minute. Stir in the garlic and cook until the garlic is golden brown. Add the Rice and salt and cook, stirring often, until the Rice begins to brown. Pour in the hot broth and stir. Reduce heat to low, cover, and allow to simmer until the water is absorbed, 20-25 minutes. Source: All Recipes ...

My friends, knowing me, all gave me food related gifts. One of those gifts was a selection of Asian fresh mushrooms. I decided to use many of them in a stir fry. I used fresh shiitake, king oyster, seafood, and enoki mushrooms. The shiitake and oyster mushrooms when cooked have a very meaty texture. The enoki mushrooms have almost the texture of noodles.

I added fresh asparagus tips, and some thinly cut white onions. I wanted the sauce to really emphasize the umami of the mushrooms. It contains soy sauce, fish sauce, liquid smoke, Rice wine vinegar, cinnamon, chili powder, black pepper, and corn starch.

I served it on a bed of brown Rice with sesame seeds. I put 1 1/2 cups brown Rice, 1/4 cup of sesame seeds, and a pinch of salt in my Rice cooker with 3 cups of water.

Whisk together soy, fish sauce, vinegar, liquid smoke, cinnamon, chili powder, pepper and cornstarch. Set aside.

Heat a wok over high heat. Add oil, stir fry onions until soft.

Add asparagus tips. Stir fry for one minute.

Add shiitake and oyster mushrooms. Stir fry until mushrooms start to release moisture.

Add seafood and enoki mushrooms. Stir fry briefly, until hot.

Add sauce, toss until thickened and everything is well coated.

Serve immediately over Rice.

Happy eating!
...

Add vegetable bouillon, beans, cumin, salt and pepper, and cook 5 minutes more, or until beans are heated through. If the sauce needs a little thickening, mash some of the beans with a spoon, and stir. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low. 3. Heat remaining 1 Tbs. oil in nonstick skillet over medium heat, and cook cubed plantains 4 to 5 minutes, until just golden. 4. Spoon Rice into large serving bowl or individual soup bowls, top with plantains and vegetables, and garnish with red onion, cilantro and scallions.
