Source: radiokenai.net --- Friday, May 24, 2013
According to national retirement planners, Alaska is the second-worst state in the country for Retirees. The national study put Oregon last, with scores based on the number of hospital beds and doctors in each state, as well as crime rates, cost of living, and temperatures. As expected, Alaska ranked lowest for average temperature, with a chilly 35.9 degrees. Hawaii was highest at 76.4 degrees. State taxes were also part of the calculations, but in that area Alaska topped the charts. State and local taxes in the 49th state were listed as 7 percent, compared to over 12 percent in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The studies also note that Alaska is the only state that does not collect state sales tax or levy an individual income tax on any type of personal income, either earned or unearned. For more, visit: Best Places to Retire ...

Source: progressillinois.com --- Tuesday, May 21, 2013
News links: State Journal-Register Illinois’ decision to provide Medicare-eligible state Retirees with private insurance, called a Medicare Advantage policy, has come under fire from union representatives who say they want the opportunity to choose federal coverage. “We seek options,” Tom Ryder of the Illinois State Employees Association Retirees (ISEAR), said Monday at a meeting with the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability. “We have to face a choice forced on us by someone who did not represent us.” A Medicare Advantage plan provides Medicare benefits to eligible state Retirees through a private insurance company instead of the federal government. “Our members will be forced into state-sponsored Medicare,” said Linda Brookhart of the State Universities Annuitants Association. “We suggest you offer a choice to continue (federal) Medicare with a state-sponsored supplement.” The union requests came as Medigap representatives made a case for using their insurance instead of contracting a private company for a Medicare Advantage Policy. According to yesterday’s speakers, the state could double the amount of money saved if Medigap insurance were used over a Medicare Advantage plan. Illinois is expected to save $116 million annually for making the switch to a Medicare Advantage policy. Lawmakers said they want to review the state’s plans in one more meeting before Medicare supplement insurance changes are made. ...

And the lower a person’s retirement income, the bigger role Social Security plays. For Americans with household retirement income less than $50,000 annually, Social Security represents a major source of income to 73% of those surveyed in a recent Gallup poll. For households with incomes above $50,000, Social Security has a major role in 49% of households. An even starker contrast is revealed when it comes to a work-sponsored pension plan. Of households with less than $50,000 in annual retirement income, only 27% depend on a pension plan for some of that income. In wealthier households, the percentage is more than double at 55%. Retirement savings accounts play an even smaller role in the household income of less wealthy Retirees, contributing a major source of income for only 19%. According to Gallup, Retirees who can supplement Social Security payments with income from a pension plan or other source “appear to be doing much better.” That should hardly come as a surprise to anyone. Gallup also notes: Income differences among Retirees today may then be a continuation of income differences that were in place before they retired, and it so happened that higher-income workers were more likely than lower-income workers to have pension benefits. That is possible, but not necessarily the case. The availability of pensions is relatively ...
