While he’s focused on winning back his place, he should tone down his England aspirations for now because he faces greater challenges at club level. “For me at Liverpool, 100 per cent it’s about cementing a starting place in the team, getting a good run of games and hopefully getting some goals for the club – If I do that then hopefully I’ll get a pick for the England squad,” he said . There is no guarantee that getting back into the Liverpool first team is going to be an easy task. If Stewart Downing stays at the club ahead of the new season, he will more than likely start as the primary winger due to the impact he had over the second half of last season. He provides a safer option for Brendan Rodgers in terms of fitness and also the experience he carries, which reduces the chances of inconsistency and individual errors. Sterling’s place is also under threat from several youngsters at the club who would step all over him to get into the first team. Suso is a ...

Raheem Sterling Wants to Cement Place in Liverpool Starting Lineup in 2013-14, Make England’s World Cup Squad

Source: nesn.com --- Monday, June 10, 2013
<img src="http://nesncom.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/raheem-sterling.jpg?w=400&h=225" & width="150" & height="84" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />Raheem Sterling is confident that Brendan Rodgers can steer Liverpool back into the top four next season. The Reds have been out of the UEFA Champions League since 2009-10, but 18-year-old Sterling believes the foundations laid by Rodgers during his maiden season mean the club will be back among Europe’s elite sooner rather than later. “We just need to get a good start to the next season and hopefully maintain that, and 100 percent I think we’ve got a good chance of finishing in the top four,” Sterling said. The Jamaican-born star made his England debut last November in a friendly against Sweden, but injury meant he sat out the end of 2012-13. His aim for next season is simple. “For me at Liverpool, 100 percent it’s about cementing a starting place in the team, getting a good run of games and hopefully getting some goals for the club, and obviously assists as well,” Sterling continued. ”If I do that then hopefully I’ll get a pick for the England squad.” It was Kenny Dalglish who granted a 17-year-old Sterling his senior debut against Wigan at the back end of 2011-12 — but it has been under Rodgers that his career has come to life. “I can’t talk any more highly of him as a person, not just as a manager,” he said of Rodgers. ”He’s a top guy. He’s one of those who isn’t only interested if you’re playing well at that moment. He looks at players who are not playing or young players. “Liverpool should be really grateful they’ve got a m ...

Raheem Sterling: Last season will make me stronger. Top 4 is the target

We are sitting in the shadow of Wembley Stadium, a mile from where he grew up as a child and yards from where he would ride his bike as a young boy watching this iconic ground rise from the rubble. "It is weird to come back and see the stadium fully built," he says. "As a kid I just used to ride round here when there wasn't much to see - just a building site." That he has no memory of the old Wembley - the iconic towers were torn down before the Liverpool winger even began junior school - is a reminder that Sterling is still finding his way as a man. It has been a whirlwind 12 months for the 18-year-old. A year ago he was nothing more than an exciting talent, one for the future. But a breakthrough season at Anfield has changed all that. It has been a year in which Sterling has been forced to grow up quickly, with a steep learning curve both on and off the field. His god-given talent catapulted him into the footballing stratosphere after a series of eye-catching performances for his club. Before long, England boss Roy Hodgson came calling. The fame, the wealth and all the trappings that come with being a top footballer in the 21st century soon followed - for good and for bad. He has been feted, injured and even falsely accused of assault after going to a party with friends. How is he coping with the fame? "I'm still getting to grips w ...
