ARLINGTON – The RANGERS’ offense managed two runs on three hits and Yu Darvish allowed five runs, though only four were earned, in six innings to lose to the Oakland A’s 6-2. Oakland first baseman Brandon Moss smacked a home run off Yu Darvish to start the second inning. Eric Sogard then increased the A’s lead to 2-0, poking a two-out single to center field that scored Josh Reddick. Catcher John Jaso added another run in the third with his solo shot to right field. The home run was Jaso’s second of the year. Texas scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the inning. Rookie Jurickson Profar advanced runners to second and third with his sacrifice bunt. That set the stage for AJ Pierzkysnki’s double, which scored Leonys Martin and Ian Kinsler. Oakland came right back in the fourth, tacking on two more. Their fourth run of the game came on a wild pitch from Darvish, which allowed third baseman Josh Donaldson to score from third. Then, Seth Smith made the score 5-2 after crossing home plate on a fielding error by RANGERS’ first baseman Lance Berkman. It was only last May that the New York RANGERS were just two wins away from a Stanley Cup Final berth. Glen Sather built a team that head coach John Tortorella could work with, and in 2011-12, together the two helped the team reach its peak. Although the RANGERS completely bought into Tortorella’s defensive system, the team lacked the offensive production to see them through to the finals. Sather saw the summer of 2012 as an opportunity to add to the team’s anemic offense and trade valuable depth for superstar Rick Nash. At the same time, the then 12-year RANGERS exec found himself in several contract disputes with even more depth forwards, players like Ruslan Fedotenko , John Mitchell and Brandon Prust . All three were eventually allowed to walk and join other clubs, so when the RANGERS opened up training camp in January of 2013, Tortorella was surrounded by a host of new faces. The ensuing season will forever be considered a disappointment, despite the team’s ability to reach the second round of the playoffs. There was a clear lack of depth down the middle, a severe shortage of goals and lack of team fluidity. In the end, Marian Gaborik and Tortorella became causalities, Brad Richards found himself the press box and Henrik Lundqvist left the organization doubting whether or not he plans to be in New York for the long haul. (AP) To the ridiculously long list of bizarre baseball injuries, we can now add another, this one with a twist of mystery: RANGERS infielder Jeff Baker is going on the disabled list with a sprained thumb that he suffered on a high-five from an unknown teammate before a game. If that sounds somewhat hard to believe, remember that this is the same sport that brought you a player cutting his hand while washing dishes (Ian Kennedy), another causing a serious spleen injury while shoveling (Carl Pavano) and a star who hurt his neck while toweling off (David Price). And those were just pitchers in the past 16 months. In the meantime, a little sympathy is in order for Baker, a nine-year journeyman who was having a fine season in a reserve role for the RANGERS, batting .317 with nine home runs. When Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced the official repeal of the U.S. Armed Forces’ ban on women in combat, it was clear that, though it would come at a measured pace and perhaps wouldn’t have the most obvious differences, change would come for the 15% of the U.S. military who are women. Today, senior defense officials told the New York Times that women will be permitted to apply and earn a place among the Navy SEALs, Army RANGERS, and Marine infantry. Probably not all three at the same time. Though, should someone ever achieve this, I’d love to shake her hand. In January, the plan was that the various armed forces would have three years, until January 2016, to examine the 230,000 jobs that had just opened up to female soldiers and determine what changes would need to be made to requirements, training, and facilities before women could be integrated into them without reducing the military’s standards. There was some speculation that after those evaluations, women would still be barred from serving “ as infantry troops or in elite special-operations units ,” but it’s hard to get more elite than the SEALs, the Army RANGERS, or Marine infantry.
