He doesn’t look a thing like Kenny Powers (see previous post), but Michael Strem brings the Thunder anyway. Strem, the only senior on the St. Francis High School of Mountain View (CA) roster, threw a 66-Pitch Perfect game to lead the Lancers over Monta Vista of Cupertino, 2-0, in the Central Coast Section Div. I playoffs last week. Yeah, that’s 66 pitches in a seven-inning game, or an average of 9.4 pitches per inning . That’s amazing for any pitcher in a high school game, let alone in the playoffs. It was the first Perfect game in school history. You may remember the St. Francis baseball program from such hits as Eric Byrnes (who went on to play for the A’s and Diamondbacks), Dan Nava (Red Sox), Daniel Descalso (Cardinals) and John Gall (Marlins, 2008 Olympic baseball team); plus Doug Cosbie (Cowboys All-Pro tight end) and Linda Cardellini ( Freaks and Geeks! and Mad Men ). Also for its heated West Catholic Athletic League rivalry with nearby Serra High of San Mateo, which produced Barry Bonds and Tom Brady. Is Strem a future pro? A 66-Pitch Perfect game was tossed by St. Francis High School senior Michael Strem last Wednesday. Strem and the top-seeded St. Francis Lancers defeated Monta Vista in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation Central Coast Section Division 1 playoffs. Strem’s Perfect game in which he obviously retired all 21 batters that he faced in the seven-inning contest also included 48 strikes and eight strikeouts, so he averaged about three pitches per batter. It was also the first Perfect game in the Mountain View, Calif., high school’s athletic history. St. Francis won the game 2-0 on a sixth inning single by Michael Strem teammate Mark Cardinalli, so opposing pitcher Peter Stern also did a fine job in the playoff matchup. Stern allowed only three hits, walked three, and struck out eight in six innings. The Lancers went on to defeat Valley Christian-San Jose on Saturday by a score of 3-0 in the quarter finals, with Michael Strem notching a one-out save in relief of southpaw John Gavin. The St. Francis Lancers advance to play Palo Alto today in the CCS semi finals. The senior’s Perfect game is not necessarily what you might call a fluke. This season, Strem recorded a dominating 10-1 mark in 13 appearances with a 1.12 ERA and 71 strikeouts. It only took Michael Strem 66 pitches to achieve a Perfect game. According to Mercury News , Strem threw a 66-Pitch Perfect game this weekend to lead St. Francis High School over Monta Vista during the first game of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs in California. It was the first Perfect game in St. Francis history. Strem told Prep 2 Prep : “It’s a pretty amazing, special day that I’ll remember for the rest of my life … I had all four pitches working today. I was getting ahead early so I was able to keep my Pitch count down.” Strem threw 66-pitches, 48 of which were strikes, and struck out eight batters during his Perfect game. For anyone doing the math at home, that’s about three pitchers per batter. Despite Strem’s 66-Pitch Perfect game, the St. Francis Lancers were only able to take the victory by 2 runs. Monta Vista pitcher Peter Stern was able to hold the Lancers scoreless through the first six-innings but he would end up allowing three hits and two runs before the game was over. Strem, who has committed to Boston College next year, added: “It definitely helped that the game was close because I couldn’t lose focus at all … And this being a CCS game, we knew that tomorrow wasn’t guaranteed so we had to step up as a team. Scott Fizgerald’s Great American Novel out for a sometimes dazzling, always irreverent spin. The gauzy picture-postcard 3-D production design and superb leading players breathe life into the Jazz Age novel. But the “Moulin Rouge!” director’s barely contained determination to Australianize, if not outright bastardize, “The Great Gatsby” is constantly at war with a book and a cast that scream “classic.” And Luhrmann isn’t having that. Gatbsy’s orgiastic parties are set to hip hop music. A clumsy sanitarium-set framing device gives Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) a tad too much Fitzgerald autobiography and too little Nick, the shrewd but passive observer. And some of the supporting player choices take you right out of the movie. Seriously, what Luhrmann and “colorblind casting” do to the “gambler” and gangster Meyer Wolfsheim is so far removed from Jewish caricature or stereotype as to be laughable.
