Freedom of speech is a highly valued commodity, but should people be allowed to say whatever they like, no matter how offensive their opinions? In this archive footage we hear where Pirate Bay Founder Gottfrid Svartholm draws the line. As well as being involved with The Pirate Bay, six years ago Gottfrid Svartholm was also an owner of PRQ, one of the most controversial webhosts in the world. PRQ was and still is a company that operates in a niche, playing host to sites and services that due to their nature are often rejected by other more sensitive companies. PRQ has hosted a range of controversial sites, not least The Pirate Bay, Wikileaks, domains operated by far-right groups and those considered by some to be terrorist-affiliated. If it’s legal in Sweden, PRQ say they will host it – no questions asked. However, in a 2007 video only recently translated into English by TPB:AFK creator Simon Klose, Gottfrid reveals that while he believes that everyone has a right to their opinions along with an open debate, certain things – even if made legal – would not be welcome at PRQ. “To fight the phenomena you have to understand the phenomena,” the then 22-year-old explains. Sunde was raised in Sweden, but has Finnish roots, and is able to run there. His platform sounds like an admirable and sensible one, and my personal experience of him is that he's a good, thoughtful and honorable person. If I were in Finland, he'd have my vote: “Non-commercial file sharing should of course become legal and protected, and must re-think copyright all together. Well, let’s be frank here and accept the fact that the Pirate Bay website has indeed done the most of us a huge favor. Hell, we probably wouldn’t get our hands on some great content that’s unavailable on the shores of our resident countries if it wasn’t for the Pirate Bay. Recently, we received tidings of Peter Sunde, the co-Founder of this website, drawing up plans to run for the European Parliament elections next year. He will participate in the Finnish branch of the Pirate Party and hopes to claim seats, just like the Swedish Pirate Party did! However, Peter does need to serve a prison sentence for his involvement with the BitTorrent site. The Pirate Bay co-Founder has been fighting against his imprisonment since quite a while now, but all of this hasn’t washed away his elections dreams! The fact that he is facing a prison sentence for his involvement with BitTorrent doesn’t seem to concern him very much. He has been fighting the sentence for a while and if he gets elected things might get very interesting indeed. Last month Swedish prosecutor Henry Olin announced that following a lengthy investigation, Pirate Bay co-Founder Gottfrid Svartholm had been charged in connection to his alleged hacking of an IT company affiliated with the government. Recent information suggests that Gottfrid intends to plead “not guilty” to claims that between January 2010 and April 2012 he and his co-conspirators accessed confidential tax records and data on the systems of Logica, an IT company working with Sweden’s tax authorities. Gottfrid and his alleged accomplices will now go on trial starting May 20 but in the meantime additional information has been emerging via Niklas Femerstrand, a researcher, hacker, political activist and friend of Gottfrid. Late last month, Femerstrand published translated transcripts of Gottfrid’s interrogation over several days between September 2012 and March 2013. Further information is now coming to light. No comment “This investigation, it has gone on since this spring and we have have quite a lot of material that we’ve been looking at. There are clear indications in this material that shows that you were involved. Do you know of this breach of Logica?” an interrogator asked Gottfrid last year. “No comments!” responded Gottfrid.
