Over the next month or so, we'll be taking a look at the various position battles set to be waged when the Eagles open training camp in late July. Yesterday we look at quarterback , today we'll move on to safety. This isn't the sexiest competition, but it is at a key area of weakness from last year's squad. The competitors Nate Allen , Colt Anderson , Patrick Chung , Kurt Coleman , Kenny Phillips , David Sims , Earl Wolff Allen & Coleman have started the majority of games at safety over the past couple seasons. Both came to the team as picks in the 2010 draft with Allen in the 2nd and Coleman in the 7th. The fact that the Eagles drafted a safety and signed two others this offseason is probably proof enough of how they feel about the progress of the Allen/Coleman pair. Patrick Chung is a former Oregon Duck who has started 30 games over the past 4 years for the New England Patriots . He's a tough, hard hitting safety but has struggled with injury concerns. Speaking of injury concerns... Kenny Phillips came over the Giants this offseason and is arguably the most talented guy in the bunch. However, his knees are a major concern and limited him to just 6 starts last season. Colt Anderson is a special teams ace, but did fill in admirably at safety last season. This one almost goes without saying. It's going to be, by default really, the #1 position battle of the summer. The competitors Michael Vick , Nick Foles , Matt Barkley , Dennis Dixon , G.J. Kinne. The Eagles have an interesting, albiet not terribly exciting cast of characters at the position. There's a lot of youth, but none that would be considered the blue chip heir apparent. Michael Vick is the most experienced of the group and despite his decline over the past 2 seasons, is still actually a capable starting QB in the league. At 32 years old (soon to be 33), he's not exactly on the verge of retirement, but he's not exactly a QB of the future either. You might be surprised to learn that right now he's actually the same age as Eli Manning . So in QB years, he's not too old to lead this team for the next couple of seasons, but at the same time if this is his prime the team could very well be looking to take a shot on someone else developing into something greater than just "capable." Certainly, most Philadelphia Eagles fans are approaching the looming training camp quarterback competition with a "may the best man win" philosophy. But that doesn't mean you can't hope that the best man winds up being either Nick Foles or Matt Barkley, rather than Michael Vick . And if you're thinking about the long-term health of the franchise, that should probably be your mentality. Vick, who turns 33 in a week, has 34 turnovers in 23 starts since the beginning of the 2011 season. He's a dynamic athlete with one hell of high ceiling, but it's a little late in the game now to expect him to become a consistently reliable franchise quarterback. He's stuck between being that and a stopgap, and while he hasn't always been the main problem in Philadelphia, he's probably not the team's long-term solution at this stage of his career. Statistically, Foles did more than Vick despite having less to work with last season. And when you consider that Foles was a rookie third-round pick and Vick was a 10-year veteran, that should be enough to convince you that the guy deserves another shot. They say he's not suited for Chip Kelly's offense, but neither is Vick, really. For at least the past decade, Eagles tickets would routinely sell out within the first hour after going on sale. Here we are over a month after going on sale and there are still tickets available. Granted, you might have trouble getting three or four together for most games, but there are still onesy-twosy’s available. The questions are why, and what happens if a game isn’t declared a sell-out? There are likely several reasons as to why all the games haven’t sold out yet, with the most logical being fan skepticism. The Eagles are coming off of two incredibly disappointing seasons in a row…8-8 during the Dream Team season in 2011 and a complete collapse to 4-12 last season. Now they have a new coach from the college ranks and are remodeling the team. Casual fans, and maybe even a few disgruntled die-hards, might be a little cautious with spending their money this year until they can see what the team looks like first. For the past few seasons, splashy off-season moves haven't translated to regular season success for the Philadelphia Eagles . The 2011 acquisitions of defensive backs Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were supposed to give the Birds their best secondary since the Brian Dawkins/Troy Vincent/Bobby Taylor trio of the late 1990s and early 2000s That's not how it worked out on the field, however. After an uneven 2011 which saw the "Dream Team" go 8-8, the Eagles ranked 30th in the league in total defense, a problem which began with their inability to cover the passing game of any opponent. Another problem was the fact that Michael Vick couldn't produce as well as he had in past years. A season which saw the former star throw just 12 touchdowns while having 10 interceptions and 11 fumbles also saw Vick miss several games with a rib injury. The myriad of problems on both sides of the ball resulted in a disappointing 4-12 record last year. With the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected offensive tackle Lane Johnson , who will forever be remembered as the first pick in the Chip Kelly era. Johnson was the third tackle drafted, behind Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel, who were selected by the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars with the top two picks in the draft, respectively. At pick No. 4, Johnson is definitely a reach . There's almost no denying that. He's played the position for just two years, having started his college career as a quarterback before switching to the offensive line. But Kelly says that he loves the selection because his ceiling is the highest , considering the massive talent he's already displayed after just two seasons. One of Kelly's favorite aspects of Johnson is his tremendous athletic ability. The former Oklahoma Sooners star is expected to be a major force in the running game, as well as downfield blocking on screen passes. Matt Barkley was taken by the Eagles in the fourth round, but was projected as more of a late first-round or second-round guy. He was also rated by NFLDraftZone.com as the second-best quarterback in the NFL Draft. Except he went much later than that, as the Eagles drafted him with the first pick of the fourth round (98th overall). Barkley could have come out of school after his junior season. As it turns out, he might have been better off doing that — even though he would have been going against Andrew Luck, RG3 and Ryan Tannehill. Perhaps, if Barkley had a great 2012 season and led USC to a national title, this year’s draft would have been a different story for him. But he didn’t play that well, and the Trojans went 7-5. Now, Barkley is a fourth-round draft pick — which, based off last year, is a big disappointment. Earlier this offseason, there was a great thread on Reddit asking fans what piece of advice they'd give their favorite team's front office five years in the past. On Monday, we expanded on that with the Dallas Cowboys , on Tuesday we hit the New York Giants and now we continue our alphabetical march through the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles . If we could go back five years to the 2008 NFL offseason and give only one line of futuristic wisdom to the Eagles, here's what we'd tell Joe Banner, Andy Reid and Howie Roseman . Make Aggressive run at Future Franchise Quarterback In 2008, the Eagles were coming off an 8-8 campaign, but we all knew they were better than that. They'd go on to make a run to the NFC Championship Game in '08 and would make the playoffs in each of the next three seasons. This sentiment has been repeated by not only HC Chip Kelly, but also one of the Eagles who is most familiar with him: Dennis Dixon. "[The QB competition] will be as long as you imagine. The Philadelphia Eagles landed maybe the most sought after coaching candidate on the market this offseason in Chip Kelly . But it appears he wasn’t the only coach on their radar. Before landing Kelly as their head man, the Eagles apparently took a run at Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin , offering him the job , according to the San Antonio Express-News. Smith, who is entering his second season at A&M, wouldn’t discuss the specifics of his NFL suitors, but he did confirm that he was offered an NFL job during the offseason. “I don’t have to say anything,” Sumlin said. “Everybody knows what I do (now). I’ve never coached in the NFL. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to do that, both as an assistant coach and even as a head coach.” Smith’s name has been tied into NFL circles for a few years now, and it would be no surprise if he eventually landed a job in the NFL.
