Yesterday we look at quarterback , today we'll move on to safety. This isn't the sexiest competition, but it is at a key area of weakness from last year's squad. The competitors Nate Allen , Colt Anderson , Patrick Chung , Kurt Coleman , Kenny Phillips , David Sims , Earl Wolff Allen & Coleman have started the majority of games at safety over the past couple seasons. Both came to the team as picks in the 2010 draft with Allen in the 2nd and Coleman in the 7th. The fact that the Eagles drafted a safety and signed two others this offseason is probably proof enough of how they feel about the progress of the Allen/Coleman pair. Patrick Chung is a former Oregon Duck who has started 30 games over the past 4 years for the New England Patriots . He's a tough, hard hitting safety but has struggled with injury concerns. Speaking of injury concerns... Kenny Phillips came over the Giants this offseason and is arguably the most talented guy in the bunch. However, his knees are a major concern and limited him to just 6 starts last season. Colt Anderson is a special teams ace, but did fill in admirably at safety last season. David Sims is a depth guy, Wolff is a rookie 5th round pick. Who could win a starting job? Nate Allen and Patrick Chung have taken the bulk of the first team snaps in camp, so th ...

The competitors Michael Vick , Nick Foles , Matt Barkley , Dennis Dixon , G.J. Kinne. The Eagles have an interesting, albiet not terribly exciting cast of characters at the position. There's a lot of youth, but none that would be considered the blue chip heir apparent. Michael Vick is the most experienced of the group and despite his decline over the past 2 seasons, is still actually a capable starting QB in the league. At 32 years old (soon to be 33), he's not exactly on the verge of retirement, but he's not exactly a QB of the future either. You might be surprised to learn that right now he's actually the same age as Eli Manning . So in QB years, he's not too old to lead this team for the next couple of seasons, but at the same time if this is his prime the team could very well be looking to take a shot on someone else developing into something greater than just "capable." Nick Foles & Matt Barkley represent the youth and are basically co-QBs of the future. Foles is heading into his second year, but thanks to Vick's injury actually got a chance to play as a rookie.
Philadelphia Eagles Fans Should Be Pulling for Anyone but Vick in QB Competition

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Tuesday, June 18, 2013
Certainly, most Philadelphia Eagles fans are approaching the looming training camp quarterback competition with a "may the best man win" philosophy. But that doesn't mean you can't hope that the best man winds up being either Nick Foles or Matt Barkley, rather than Michael Vick . And if you're thinking about the long-term health of the franchise, that should probably be your mentality. Vick, who turns 33 in a week, has 34 turnovers in 23 starts since the beginning of the 2011 season. He's a dynamic athlete with one hell of high ceiling, but it's a little late in the game now to expect him to become a consistently reliable franchise quarterback. He's stuck between being that and a stopgap, and while he hasn't always been the main problem in Philadelphia, he's probably not the team's long-term solution at this stage of his career. Statistically, Foles did more than Vick despite having less to work with last season. And when you consider that Foles was a rookie third-round pick and Vick was a 10-year veteran, that should be enough to convince you that the guy deserves another shot. They say he's not suited for Chip Kelly's offense, but neither is Vick, really. Foles gets the ball out faster, has a stronger pocket presence, avoids pressure and is fairly calm and cool when dropping back. And while he's not the most accurate quarterback in the world, he turns it over less often than Vick. The problem is that many of you have warped ...

Just ask us. We'll tell you. It's been 53 years since the franchise last won an NFL championship. The team has appeared in just two Super Bowls and, as we all know, both ended in losses. But despite a franchise that is 40 games under .500 for its history, the fans have never stopped caring, never stopped supporting, never stopped loving. Basically we're like the old married couple that fights all the time but couldn't even begin to imagine life without one another. Soon after, Roger Goodell dug himself even deeper with the fan base (and running backs for that matter), and eight new head coaching vacancies were filled in a matter of weeks.Well, already we're months past the Draft, and we're even through with OTAs. With that, training camp is literally right around the corner and that means the 2013 season is finally starting. Honestly though, does it ever end? Some may hate this part of the season, considering there still isn't any football being played. Well, believe it or not, training camp and the decisions made during that time can make or break a teams year. There will be lots to look out for, from heated roster battles, seeing how the new head coaches will fair, and to just flat out a... ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Sunday, June 16, 2013
The 2013 Philadelphia Eagles may not lead the NFL in wins, but they should be among the game’s more interesting teams. Chip Kelly brings a new brand of football to the Eagles, one that could revolutionize the league, and one that could fail miserably. The ensuing summer months will provide the 90 current members on the active roster with the opportunity to showcase their skills for Kelly. Considering the Eagles went 4-12 under Andy Reid last year, no job is safe, and the offseason buzz will be rampant. Kelly has been trying offensive players at defensive positions, which certainly makes life interesting. Along with the ongoing quarterback controversy and the allure of a high-speed offense, the Eagles should be well-covered in the news. The following are the top news stories thus far from the offseason. Begin Slideshow ...

Source: eaglesaddict.com --- Saturday, June 15, 2013
Photo: helmet2helmet.com All tickets for single games during the 2013 Philadelphia Eagles season still have not sold out. For at least the past decade, Eagles tickets would routinely sell out within the first hour after going on sale. Here we are over a month after going on sale and there are still tickets available. Granted, you might have trouble getting three or four together for most games, but there are still onesy-twosy’s available. The questions are why, and what happens if a game isn’t declared a sell-out? There are likely several reasons as to why all the games haven’t sold out yet, with the most logical being fan skepticism. The Eagles are coming off of two incredibly disappointing seasons in a row…8-8 during the Dream Team season in 2011 and a complete collapse to 4-12 last season. Now they have a new coach from the college ranks and are remodeling the team. Casual fans, and maybe even a few disgruntled die-hards, might be a little cautious with spending their money this year until they can see what the team looks like first. And speaking of spending money, the Eagles raised ticket prices this year. So, you have a team coming off of two disastrous, underachieving non-playoff seasons, a new, unproven coaching regime and they want you to pay even more money to watch them. Not the best of combinations to make tickets in high demand. I think the fans are taking a wait-and-see approach. If the team looks improved and conten ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Friday, June 14, 2013
For the past few seasons, splashy off-season moves haven't translated to regular season success for the Philadelphia Eagles . The 2011 acquisitions of defensive backs Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie were supposed to give the Birds their best secondary since the Brian Dawkins/Troy Vincent/Bobby Taylor trio of the late 1990s and early 2000s That's not how it worked out on the field, however. After an uneven 2011 which saw the "Dream Team" go 8-8, the Eagles ranked 30th in the league in total defense, a problem which began with their inability to cover the passing game of any opponent. Another problem was the fact that Michael Vick couldn't produce as well as he had in past years. A season which saw the former star throw just 12 touchdowns while having 10 interceptions and 11 fumbles also saw Vick miss several games with a rib injury. The myriad of problems on both sides of the ball resulted in a disappointing 4-12 record last year. Looking forward to 2013, the Eagles made some big changes, releasing Asomugha and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, among others. Philly added a new head coach, parting ways with Andy Reid and welcoming in Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. The Eagles also signed cornerback Cary Williams from the world champion Baltimore Ravens , safety Kenny Phillips and running back Felix Jones. In order to achieve success in 2013, here are 10 things the Eagles must do throughout the season. Begin Slideshow ...

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Thursday, June 13, 2013
With the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected offensive tackle Lane Johnson , who will forever be remembered as the first pick in the Chip Kelly era. Johnson was the third tackle drafted, behind Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel, who were selected by the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars with the top two picks in the draft, respectively. At pick No. 4, Johnson is definitely a reach . There's almost no denying that. He's played the position for just two years, having started his college career as a quarterback before switching to the offensive line. But Kelly says that he loves the selection because his ceiling is the highest , considering the massive talent he's already displayed after just two seasons. One of Kelly's favorite aspects of Johnson is his tremendous athletic ability. The former Oklahoma Sooners star is expected to be a major force in the running game, as well as downfield blocking on screen passes. In that sense, his athletic ability will fit in nicely with Jason Peters, Evan Mathis, Jason Kelce and Todd Herremans. You could easily call those five the most athletic group of offensive linemen in the league. But don't expect Johnson's rookie season to be a cakewalk. Far from it, in fact. Look at the last time the Eagles drafted an offensive lineman in the first round. Danny Watkins was also considered a reach, and he really struggled during his first two years in the le ...

Philadelphia Eagles sign QB Matt Barkley to four year deal

Source: nfldraftzone.com --- Thursday, June 13, 2013
Matt Barkley was taken by the Eagles in the fourth round, but was projected as more of a late first-round or second-round guy. He was also rated by NFLDraftZone.com as the second-best quarterback in the NFL Draft. Except he went much later than that, as the Eagles drafted him with the first pick of the fourth round (98th overall). Barkley could have come out of school after his junior season. As it turns out, he might have been better off doing that — even though he would have been going against Andrew Luck, RG3 and Ryan Tannehill. Perhaps, if Barkley had a great 2012 season and led USC to a national title, this year’s draft would have been a different story for him. But he didn’t play that well, and the Trojans went 7-5. Now, Barkley is a fourth-round draft pick — which, based off last year, is a big disappointment. That disappointment includes a massive financial hit in light of where pundits thought he’d get selected. Here’s the good news, though. The Eagles wanted him badly enough to trade this year’s seventh-round pick to the Jaguars in order to move up three spots and grab him. Now the question is, can Matt Barkley beat out Michael Vick or Nick Foles for the starting position? ...

Offseason Time-Traveling: Advice for the 2008 Philadelphia Eagles

Source: bleacherreport.com --- Thursday, June 13, 2013
Earlier this offseason, there was a great thread on Reddit asking fans what piece of advice they'd give their favorite team's front office five years in the past. On Monday, we expanded on that with the Dallas Cowboys , on Tuesday we hit the New York Giants and now we continue our alphabetical march through the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles . If we could go back five years to the 2008 NFL offseason and give only one line of futuristic wisdom to the Eagles, here's what we'd tell Joe Banner, Andy Reid and Howie Roseman . Make Aggressive run at Future Franchise Quarterback In 2008, the Eagles were coming off an 8-8 campaign, but we all knew they were better than that. They'd go on to make a run to the NFC Championship Game in '08 and would make the playoffs in each of the next three seasons. So you could argue that we don't actually have to go back half a decade to fix the Eagles. They were in good shape at that point and it wasn't until they started spending like the apocalypse was coming in 2011 that things started going downhill. Instead, though, let's address the way the Eagles handled their quarterback situation at that point in time, because repercussions from those decisions regarding signal-callers are still impacting the team greatly today. Donovan McNabb was only 31, but he had missed 15 games over the last three seasons and his rate-based numbers were beginning to decline. Reid and Co. drafted Kevin K ...

Most have their favorites. Michael Vick or Nick Foles ? Maybe Matt Barkley? GJ Kinne or Dennis Dixon ... well, probably not. There's bad news for those who want a starter to be named soon . It appears that the Eagles QB competition could go on for a long time. This sentiment has been repeated by not only HC Chip Kelly, but also one of the Eagles who is most familiar with him: Dennis Dixon. "[The QB competition] will be as long as you imagine. That's what Chip Kelly is," Dixon said. "He keeps everyone on their toes. As an athlete, you have to be ready. Whenever your name is called, you have to be ready." - PE.com Normally, the thoughts of a third string QB probably wouldn't matter. In this case, Dixon's words may be worth paying attention to since he's familiar with Chip from their time together at Oregon. When asked when the winner of the competition would be decided , former Dixon responded with a specific date: "September 5." That's 4 days before the Eagles season opener (9/9) on MNF in DC versus RGThreesus ( Robert Griffin III ) and the Washington Redskins . The exact date may be arbitrary, but the overall sentiment is legitimate. The QB competition is real and won't be decided easily. Chip is going to use all the information he's gleaned from mini-camps, OTAs, training camp practices, and pre-season games to make an informed decision. There's really no good reason to ...

But it appears he wasn’t the only coach on their radar. Before landing Kelly as their head man, the Eagles apparently took a run at Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin , offering him the job , according to the San Antonio Express-News. Smith, who is entering his second season at A&M, wouldn’t discuss the specifics of his NFL suitors, but he did confirm that he was offered an NFL job during the offseason. “I don’t have to say anything,” Sumlin said. “Everybody knows what I do (now). I’ve never coached in the NFL. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to do that, both as an assistant coach and even as a head coach.” Smith’s name has been tied into NFL circles for a few years now, and it would be no surprise if he eventually landed a job in the NFL. But after a successful first season with the Aggies, which included an 11-2 record and the NCAA’s first freshman Heisman trophy in Johnny Manziel , it’s no surprise he decided to go back. He does see the NFL in his future, though. “Maybe later — some time later,” Sumlin said. “But it won’t be anytime soon.” Smith’s name will probably be hot on the NFL circuit again next offseason, and, who knows, if he lands a job maybe he’ll take Manziel along with him. (Richard Rodriguez/CSM/Landov) By Zac Ellis Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin impressed more than a few onlookers after leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record during his debut season at the helm in 2012. Apparently, that line of thinking extended as far as the NFL. Sumlin told the San Antonio Express-News that he’s already had several opportunities to make the jump to the pros — perhaps even as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. “I don’t have to say anything,” Sumlin said in response to his name being associated with future pro jobs. “Everybody knows what I do (now). I’ve never coached in the NFL. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to do that, both as an assistant coach and even as a head coach. But there’s a reason I coach college football, and we’ve got a lot of work to do here. We’re still playing catch-up, and we finished third in the SEC West last year (behind Alabama and LSU). By no means have we arrived.” TexAgs.com co-owner and A&M insider Billy Liucci told the Express-News that the Eagles offered Sumlin their head-coaching job before finally reaching a deal with former Oregon coach Chip Kelly. Auburn also reportedly sought Sumlin for its then-vacant coaching position before ultimately bringing back Gus Malzahn. The interest in Sumlin shouldn’t come as surprise; his Aggies surprised the nation with their first-year success in the SEC, whic ...
