TIGERS RELEASE JOHN LINDSEY; GREG SMITH, PEDRO GUERRERO HAVE NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Source: indybaseballchatter.blogspot.com --- Saturday, May 11, 2013
The end may have come–at least in the affiliated ranks–for John Lindsey, one of the prominent players to come out of the Can-Am League. The powerful right-handed hitter now 36 was one of a few intriguing former Independent Baseball players released in recent days. Lindsey was let go in his second season with Detroit’s top farm club in Toledo at a time when he was hitting only .200 (16-for-80, 22 games) although he had four home runs (seven RBI). Lindsey, who played for the New Jersey Jackals (Little Falls), only reached the major leagues once. He got into 11 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers late in 2010, getting one hit in 12 at-bats. OTHER RELEASES, SIGNINGS One surprising release was that of Juan Cedeno (Rio Grande Valley, North American League) from the New York Yankees’ top farm club in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA. Not only is he a southpaw, but he was an invitee to the major league spring training camp and he allowed only one earned run in 11 innings spread over 10 appearances in the regular season. He was the SWB team’s All-Star Game representative last season. The Chicago White Sox cut outfielder Billy Rice from their Class A farm club in Winston-Salem, NC. He formerly played for Camden, NJ of the Atlantic League. Southpaw Greg Smith, who made six starts for Grand Prairie, TX (American Association) in 2011, one year after spending time with the Colorado Rockies, has a new affiliated opportunity. Philadelphia signed the 29 ...

Two years ago, Mike Marshall worked in the Arizona Winter League in Yuma, Ariz., a destination designed for players looking to make some offseason noise. The league brought along Pedro Guerrero, who was looking to get back into baseball as a manager or coach. For a portion of seven seasons, Guerrero and Marshall were teammates on the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two provided a formidable middle of the order but the two hadn’t kept in contact much after that time. Marshall would often ask ex-teammate Mariano Duncan, “How is Pete?” “To be honest, I didn’t expect much … or didn’t know what to expect,” Marshall said about the Arizona experience. “But I was very impressed with the way he handled the young players and how he’d throw batting practice every day.” When Marshall became commissioner of the Pacific Association this season, he handed Vallejo Admirals president and general manager Joe Fontana a list of names. Guerrero was one of those. Guerrero, 56, was introduced as field manager of the Vallejo independent baseball team on Wednesday morning at the Admirals’ office on Amador Street in Vallejo. He arrived in town on Sunday. “When Joe called, I was excited; I am still excited,” said Guerrero, who spent 15 seasons in the big leagues with the Do ...

Pedro Guerrero introduced as manager of Vallejo Admirals

Source: www.baseballthinkfactory.org --- Thursday, May 09, 2013
Wonder if OJ will offer a congratulatory phone call… The former five-time All-Star was known for getting into trouble in the past. In maybe the most publicized case, he was charged with guaranteeing payment for a $200,000 cocaine shipment. He was, however, acquitted of drug conspiracy charges in June 2000. “I feel like that was a long time ago,” Guerrero said. “I wasn’t charged; I walked free. I feel like I was set up for some reason. I don’t like to look back. I hit 15 home runs in June of 1985 and I don’t even like to talk about that. That’s in the past.” Fontana addressed that question as well. “The incident that you are referring to we looked into pretty heavily,” Fontana said. “Like Pedro said, it’s in the rear-view mirror. It was a long time ago. It was determined that someone tried to set him up.” Fontana said that Guerrero’s life experience could help young players who could become distracted by incidents away from the field. “A guy like Pedro can sit down and talk to (players) about baseball but can also talk to them about life,” Fontana said. “That’s important. Sometimes the talent is there, but the life experience isn’t. Pedro has a lot of life experience.” ...

The line was moving pretty quickly and within 1/2 an hour I was inside the shop. I had planned to get my ROMLB signed but when I saw the 8x10 photo above, I couldn't resist. I really like these action photos where the player is in color but the rest of the photo is black & white. Therefore, I got the 8x10 signed and my ROMLB with the "81 WS MVP" inscription. Take a look at the photos below. Guerrero signing my ROMLB Guerrero signing my 8x10 Don't forget, the next signing at Harry's Dugout will be Paul Lo Duca on June 1, 2013 . True to the Blue! ...

Source: davidsautographsignings.blogspot.com --- Sunday, May 05, 2013
<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bQ761gtVBNM/UYcCxsWIPVI/AAAAAAAAGGA/fDh6VzOroR8/s320/IMG_9607.JPG" & width="150" & height="112" style="margin: 5pt 10px 0px 0px; float: left;" border="1" align="left" alt="" />To celebrate Cinco de Mayo I decided to head out to Harry's Dugout for the first time for the Pedro Guerrero signing. I wanted to add Pedro Guerrero to my signed Dodger baseball collection and I also wanted to complete a trade with my friend Andrew as well. I arrived at Harry's Dugout around 12:45. The signing was scheduled to take place from 1-3:30pm. As soon as I arrived I ran into a bunch of my graphing buddies including Josh , Alex , Franz, Mike , Martin , Jerry, Andy, Andrew and Big Mike . It was also cool meeting Edward for the first time in person along with Larry who helped run the signing. I chatted it up a bit and met up with Andrew to complete our trade. I traded my signed Dwight Howard shoes pictured below for a signed Hank Aaron ROMLB and a signed Adrian Gonzalez ROMLB with Andrew. Afterwards we went inside the store to get our autographs from Pedro Guerrero. I had Pedro sign a ROMLB on the SS with the 81 WS MVP inscription. This completed my 81 WS MVP signed baseball collection of Cey, Yeager and Guerrero. I want to thank everyone at Harry's Dugout including Edward and Larry for hosting another great signing. ...
