Even though Prince has some half a billion songs of his own, he enjoys a good cover. In fact, many fans would argue he’s just as likely to pop off a classic FM Jam on the whim as The Boss or Phish. Here’s some fuel for that reasoning: Recently, the Twin Cities royalty has turned his head to the Pacific Northwest with a silky rendition of Pearl Jam’s classic hit, “Even Flow”. As Dr. Funkenberry.com points out, the eccentric icon has been rehearsing a spin on the song, which “features a guitar duel between Prince and Donna Grantis that morphs into Aretha Franklin’s version of ‘Rock Steady’ before reprising the end vamp of ‘Even Flow’.” He’s currently prepping for tomorrow night’s hometown gig at Minneapolis’ The Myth. "We did a lot of stuff in that short period of time. Luckily, most of it was documented." There were a tight handful of Mad Season shows, such as those at Seattle's Moore Theatre and that city's famed (and now-defunct) RKCNDY nightclub, but most notably, there was the band's sole full-length disc, 1995's Above, an engrossing collection of moody, blues-and-Jam-oriented songs that yielded the radio hit River Of Deceit. Following the release of Above, McCready and Staley returned to their full-time bands, and while there was some talk of Mad Season reconvening, the deaths of both Saunders (in 1999) and Staley (three years later) effectively put an end to the band. Recently, Above received the deluxe reissue treatment, with the package including a DVD of both the Moore Theatre and RKCNDY gigs, along with three long-dormant, previously unreleased tracks that Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan wrote lyrics for and has now put vocals to. This toddler has quite a memory -- good enough to sing along to a complex, multi-verse rock song. Two-year-old Penelope's now viral video of herself in a carseat rocking out to Pearl Jam's 1993 hit "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" even impressed the band, who posted it on their Facebook page on Wednesday . Even though Penelope's enthusiasm seems to fade by the song's second half (being a toddler, she also gets distracted by an airplane at one point), we still salute her budding grunge-rock talents and eagerly wait to see what she'll do next.
