We are just loving seeing Andrew Garfield back in the tights as the Amazing Spider-Man ! And for this one, it looks like they're ramping up the action! Who is he fighting this time? That's Oscar -nominated actor Paul Giamatti looking like an insane person! Paul is playing The Rhino, a Russian mercenary who gets his hands on a rhino costume that gives him super strength and invulnerability that makes him a match for Spidey. Although The Amazing Spider-Man was widely criticized for the highly implausible scene where Peter Parker accidentally stumbles into a hi-tech lab where an extremely dangerous experiment involving radiation is being conducted without anyone noticing him, for the ridiculous scene where Spider-Man is rescued by a gang of friendly crane operators, for the boring climactic scene that ineptly plagiarizes from Batman Begins , and for just generally being a pointless and redundant cash-in, the one thing it wasn’t criticized for was its acting. And from what we can tell based on the first still image from Amazing Spider-Man 2 , it looks like the acting in the sequel will also escape criticism as well. Yesterday, director Marc Webb Tweeted the above photo along with the message “Привет Америка. Познакомьтесь с Алексеем Сицевичем!” Which is apparently Russian for, “Hello America. Meet Aleksei Sytsevich !” For those who need further clarification: Aleksei Sytsevich is the name of The Rhino, a Spider-Man villain who got his powers as the result of a Soviet experiment. By the looks of it, Paul Giamatti has really immersed himself in the role, and we have every reason to believe that he’ll be absolutely fantastic. Here is our first look at Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich (a.k.a. The Rhino) in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 . As you can tell from the pictures, this Rhino looks drastically different from the one in the comics in terms of appearance. Whether or not this is just an early scene in the movie before Sytsevich’s transformation remains to be seen. Nonetheless, he still looks pretty menacing with his tattoos. Now directer Marc Webb has tweeted a first look at Giamatti in character as Aleksei Sytsevich (before the transformation), and we have 16 additional set photos taken in Brooklyn, New York this weekend.
