Why isn't Paul Broun the candidate to unite Georgia Republican factions?

For the last 25 years, the Georgia Republican Party has seen a constant tension between small-l libertarian leanings and social conservatives who are willing to place greater restrictions on activities the state allows. It was the motivating force from the late 1980s, when Christian conservatives established themselves as a major force within the party and now the liberty wing of the party is attempting to wrest back control of the party structure. On paper, Paul Broun might seem a likely candidate to unite these factions, but in reality, it appears that won't be the case. Is there something intrinsic to a combination of Christian conservatism and Constitutional libertarianism that prevents it, or is it specific to the candidate? For those who hope that Christian conservatives and advocates of more limited government can peacefully coexist within a bigger GOP tent, it is comforting to say that the fact Broun's support in polls is indistinguishable from that of other less-ideological Congressman is due to Broun's personality or public persona. But does it point to a more basic incompatability between some tenets of Christian conservatism and Constitutional conservatives? ...

Ready or not, here comes Paul Broun. Karen Handel, the former Republican candidate for governor, was supposed to the featured attraction at a Tuesday night meeting of Georgia C.H.A.R.G.E (Citizens Helping America Restore Government Ethics). Paul Broun scored the endorsement Thursday of former Congressman Ron Paul, the Texas lawmaker who cultivated a national network of rowdy libertarian activists and small dollar donors over the last four decades in the House of Representatives. “Paul Broun and I worked together in the House to bring some necessary oversight to the Federal Reserve,” Paul said of the pair’s mutual interest in auditing the nation’s central bank. “I endorse Paul Broun on his candidacy to the U.S. Senate.” Broun, in the same release, gushed on Paul’s “courage and principles” in opposing “out-of-control” spending. “As Dr. Paul knows, it’s often a lonely fight when you’re one of the few Members in Congress with the courage and principles to say no to the out-of-control spending being done by both political parties,” Broun said. “When Dr. Paul retired, I picked up the mantle right where he left off by reintroducing his Audit the Fed bill. … I’m ready to take that kind of leadership along with my beliefs about limited government to the United States Senate.” Broun had less than a quarter of the cash reserved than either of his likely rivals–his campaign entered the second quarter of the year with little more than $200,000 banked, according to its most recent finance disclosures–but the Paul endorsement opens a new revenue stream.
