By now, Orlando Shaw and the 14 women who gave birth to his 22 children probably have Harriet Tubman turning over in her grave. That’s because Shaw and his baby mamas are doing what abolitionists like Tubman tried to help other slaves escape from being forced to do: To become nothing more than breeders – and reinforce racist notions that black people are more animalistic than human. “Durin’ slavery there was stockmen [males used for breeding],” recalled Maggie Stenhouse, a former slave, in the book “African-American Studies: Voices of African-American Women in Slavery”. “They was weighed and tested. A man would rent the stockman and put him in a room with some young women he wanted to raise children from.” Today, though, the stockmen have been replaced by men like Shaw, who recently made headlines when he was hauled into court in Nashville for failing to pay child support. The only difference is that now, the system that once viewed them as chattel now treats them as expendable. Instead of working on a plantation, Shaw will likely wind up doing some measure of free labor if he is ultimately incarcerated for not paying child support. Desmond Hatchett, another Tennessee man who made headlines last year for fathering 24 children with numerous women, already sits in prison for his failure to pay child support. This morning, Aquatica, SeaWorld’s Waterpark TM in Orlando proudly hosted the fourth annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™. More than 140 guests joined us to set a world record and help save lives by spreading awareness about the importance of water safety. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children ages 1-14. Research shows that if a child doesn't learn to swim before the 3rd grade, they likely never will. The World's Largest Swimming Lesson is designed to draw attention to this issue, and encourage participation in swimming lesson programs. Tens of thousands of kids and adults at aquatic facilities around the world united for the fourth year in a row to set a new Guinness World Record at 11 a.m. EST. Among the guests at Aquatica today was U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member and three-time Olympic gold medalist, Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines who lent a helping hand with the lesson. The Orlando Magic will open their 2013/14 preseason schedule on Wednesday, October 9th with a visit to Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, where they'll host the New Orleans Pelicans , the team announced Tuesday. The October visit will mark the third time Orlando has played a preseason game in Jacksonville. Its most recent trip there was in 2008, when it defeated the Miami Heat , 100-92, behind 26 points and 14 rebounds from Dwight Howard . Rashard Lewis added 21 points and eight boards in the win. Orlando will announce its full preseason schedule at a later date. The Magic are set to begin training camp on October 1st at Amway Center. Orlando split the season-series with the Pelicans, then known as the Hornets, in 2012/13; each team won on its opponent's home floor. Looking for Orlando Magic tickets ?
