Belted into the wheelchair, Levine and two aides waited while the podium hoisted him about 3 feet in the air and its interior rotated 180 degrees to leave him facing the audience. Nellie Melba was born on this day in 1861, and became the most famous soprano in the world in her day. She was the first Australian to establish world wide fame in classical music; her start was (perhaps unsurprisingly) not in the United States, but rather in Australia and especially Europe. Her stage name "Melba" was a tip of the hat to her native Melbourne (her Christian name was Helen Porter Mitchell). Today she is best known for the desert created for her by the greatest chef of the day, Auguste Escoffier. Peach Melba involves peaches and vanilla ice cream, covered with a raspberry coulis. Interestingly, Escoffier created several other dishes for her. Her fame was perhaps due to the fact that she had perfect pitch. She became wildly successful and quite wealthy, recording a large number of the new fangled gramophone records. Her reputation was such that at this farewell performance, King George V and Queen Mary attended. ...

Needless to say it didn't turn out so well : A Holocaust-themed Opera production was cancelled last week after its traumatic scenes caused a number of guests to seek medical help. The modern production of Richard Wagner’s Tannhauser, had its opening night at the Rheinoper in Düsseldorf. Despite initial protests from the Opera house, director Burkhard C Kosminski reportedly insisted on a realistic portrayal of atrocities at a concentration camp "for artistic reasons", an Opera house spokesperson told the BBC. Graphic scenes included rape, suicide and a family having their heads shaved before they were shot. Some guests were subsequently treated for shock. A spokesperson for the Opera house added that “some scenes were depicted very realistically [and caused] psychological and physical stress." Michael Szentei-Heise, head of the Jewish community in Dusseldorf, told the Associated Press that the production was "tasteless and not legitimate. "This Opera has nothing to do with the Holocaust. However, I think the audience has made this very clear to the Opera and the producer." Wagner, who is widely regarded as an antisemite, was one of Adolf Hitler’s favourite musicians. Israelis still refrain from playing his music. The production will now only be performed in concert... Maybe they could bring it to Canada's "human rights" mausoleum.
